Role summary: Join athenahealth as an Associate Software Engineer and help build the systems that power modern medical billing and claim workflows. This hybrid position is based in Boston, MA and combines hands-on front-end and back-end engineering work to deliver reliable, user-focused features that reduce manual effort for our clients. You will work on product components that transform clinical and administrative data into billable items, improve claims processing reliability, and scale across diverse practice types. This role reports to the Senior Manager.

Team summary: In athenaCollector we build technology solutions that automate Revenue Cycle Management (RCM). This Collector team is implementing the underlying medical back-office processes to automate and integrate the unique claims cycle requirements.

The athenaCollector product builds a critical part of the athenaOne platform, which helps our medical provider clients manage their business and revenue cycle (RCM), automating claims and billing for well over $200 billion in client revenue. This team focuses on providing both clients and athena teams with the right features and tools to minimize cash flow delays and operational costs, increase scalability, and help clients maximize the value they get from athenaOne.

As part of this team, you will enable reliable, auditable workflows that touch the billing and claims processes. You will work on both user-facing applications and backend services that process medical data into billable items and create corresponding claims to send them to payers. The team values measurable outcomes, strong user-focused design, observability, and security. You will partner with product managers, UX designers, data engineers, and other engineering teams to deliver solutions that reduce manual work for clients, accelerate collections, and scale across diverse practice types. Day-to-day you will contribute to feature development, help maintain service reliability and performance, participate in code reviews, and learn production-grade practices for building secure, observable systems. The team emphasizes collaboration, continuous improvement, and building software that has clear, measurable impact on client operations.

Essential Job Responsibilities

  • Write and maintain automated tests and contribute to system observability (metrics, logging, tracing) and incident response practices.

  • Participate in code reviews and follow secure coding standards to ensure data protection and compliance.

  • Use AI-enabled developer tools and prompt-engineering practices to enhance productivity, learn new AI techniques relevant to software delivery, and apply them safely to accelerate tasks such as code generation, testing, or documentation.

  • Communicate effectively with product managers, designers, and cross-functional partners to translate requirements into implementable solutions.

Additional Job Responsibilities

  • Assist with debugging and troubleshooting production issues and perform root cause analysis.

  • Help maintain developer documentation, runbooks, and onboarding materials for new team members.

  • Contribute to technical design discussions and provide pragmatic input on trade-offs.

  • Engage in pair programming and mentoring with peers to improve code quality and team practices.

  • Collaborate with security and compliance partners to remediate identified issues.

Expected Education & Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or a related technical field, or equivalent practical experience.

  • 0–2 years of professional software engineering experience or internships/co-op experience in software development.

  • Knowledge or coursework using React, JavaScript, HTML, and CSS for building web applications.

  • Knowledge with Java and Spring Boot or equivalent backend frameworks.

  • Practical knowledge of AWS container services such as ECS and/or EKS.

  • Understanding of relational databases (Oracle, PostgreSQL) and ability to write efficient SQL queries.

  • Knowledge Agile methodologies or experience working on cross-functional teams.

  • Experience or interest in GraphQL is a plus.

  • Demonstrated willingness to learn AI-enabled development practices such as prompt engineering and applied coding assistants.
