  • Ph.D. in Immunology, Pharmacology, Cell Biology, Molecular Biology or related life sciences field with at least 6-8 years of industry or academic experience required 
  • Extensive experience with animal models of human disease as evidenced by publication record 
  • Experience establishing human tumor xenograft models  
  • At least 5 years of leadership experience with a track record of managing teams and laboratory operations 
  • Experience with models of bone marrow transplantation and / or SCD is desirable 
  • Experience performing flow cytometric analysis of peripheral blood, bone marrow and other tissues is desirable

  • Establishing humanized mouse models in support of Tessera’s sickle cell disease (SCD) hematopoietic stem cell (HSC) editing program 
  • Designing and executing in-vivo experiments to study drug product editing efficacy, safety, pharmacokinetics  
  • Establishing humanized mouse and tumor xenograft models in support of Tessera’s T cell editing program 
  • Performing IHC, IF, ISH and flow cytometric analysis of blood, tissue and bone marrow samples to monitor the presence and distribution of edited cells 
  • Designing and executing nonhuman primate studies in support of our HSC and T cell editing programs 
  • Designing and executing nonclinical studies to support IND applications for advancing product candidates 
  • Authoring, updating and maintaining IACUC protocols for our in-vivo studies 
  • Managing and mentoring a group of junior in-vivo scientific staff  
  • Staying abreast of the current relevant medical literature and contributing your expert opinions to scientific discussions during cross functional project team meetings 
  • Contributing novel ideas about how we can apply our core technologies to diseases with unmet needs 

About you: 

You are a highly motivated in vivo/ex vivo scientist with robust experience in hematopoietic stem cell biology and/or cancer immunology. You have experience designing and executing studies to help drive early discovery research and are interested in utilizing Tessera’s Gene Writers to edit hematopoietic stem cells and immune cells in vivo.

James Rottman, DVM, PHD, DACVP - Head of Pharmacology 

Jim is a veterinary pathologist with 30+ years of experience in the biotech industry focused in pharmacology, discovery pathology and investigative toxicology. He holds specific expertise in immunopathology and the development of immunotherapeutics and specializes in the integration/ interpretation of complex clinical, histologic and molecular data.  

Jim enjoys sharing his passion for pathology and immunology with veterinary students. He is a former US Army officer and Desert Shield/Storm veteran and a current instructor pilot.
