About Tutor
We believe robots are the biggest lever we have to making the physical world a better, more affordable place. But robots are a rounding error in our society: nearly nine out of ten American factories and warehouses don’t even have a single robot, and robots have yet to make their way into our homes or places of business.

Tutor Intelligence is changing that.

Tutor is a robotics research and deployment company, building generally capable robot hardware and artificial intelligence to enable robots to go where no robots have gone before. Sonny is a semi-humanoid robot with frontier dexterity approaching the human form. Cassie does back-breaking work, moving boxes, pallets, and bulk goods for businesses from family-owned manufacturers to some of the largest brands in the world. Tutor robots are manufactured at scale and operate as a network, combining the whole fleet’s learned experience to train ever more capable robot artificial intelligence.

Founded at MIT and headquartered in Watertown, MA, our team is full stack: we design and manufacture robot hardware, train our own models, work directly with the smallest and largest end-customers, and maintain our fleet across the United States. We’re a team of researchers, engineers, technicians, operators, and sellers who love building things and solving hard problems.

Our mission is grand: robots everywhere, for the common good, raising the standard of living across North America, and then the world.

The Role
As our first Applied AI Engineer on Finance, you'll build the operating system for how Tutor runs its finances: planning and forecasting, billing, the close, and the numbers leadership and the board run the company on. You'll design the process flows and change the shape of the work, and you'll do it by writing a lot of software: building whole workflows, tools, and AI agents from scratch rather than living in spreadsheets.

This is a technical role where you write and own software, and you'll embed as a true member of our finance team, owning outcomes for that team through technology. You'll have full visibility into what finance does across the business, and you'll treat finance as part of the wider Tutor system: our robots, deployments, customers, and data. Tutor sells robot labor with usage-based pricing, so billing, revenue, and unit economics all depend on what the robots actually do.

You'll join our forward-deployed AI engineering team: a strategic team of engineers already embedded across deployment, manufacturing, maintenance, and hardware and software engineering, using AI to change how each of those functions works. You'll be its first engineer dedicated to finance.

You'll start by taking over and extending finance tools we've already built. From there you'll steward the area as the business grows, using the tools alongside the team and improving them to handle more scale and complexity.

What you'll work on

  • Architect and build the systems finance runs on, including FP&A and forecasting tools integrated with our existing systems, with live dashboards and analytics in place of spreadsheets.
  • Automate the close with software and AI agents: reconciliations, AP/AR, spend review, and variance explanations.
  • Own the usage-to-invoice pipeline, so billing reconciles to what our robots actually did.
  • Build the financial data layer that joins accounting, spend, CRM, billing, and robot operations data.
  • Model the business in code: pricing and deal economics, fleet and financing scenarios, and the annual operating plan.
  • Take over and extend the tools we already have, and keep them working as the team and the business scale.
  • Build in the controls, checks, and audit trails that let the numbers hold up to auditors, lenders, and investors.

What we're looking for

  • You've architected and shipped a real system end to end, whether product, internal tooling, data, or infrastructure, and can explain the design choices behind it.
  • You write working software (Python, SQL, APIs, data pipelines) and build with LLMs and AI coding tools every day.
  • A technical background with a spike somewhere else: finance, economics, operations, strategy, or founding something. Your path probably hasn't been linear.
  • Demonstrated passion for, interest in, or experience with finance, and a fundamental understanding of how a company's finances work. You don't need to have held a finance title.
  • Precision: you build checks, sweat edge cases, and hate a number you can't explain.
  • High slope: you learn fast, take on ambiguous problems with little direction, and want to make a mark.
  • You want to be embedded in a business function. This is not a product engineering or research role.

Nice to haves

  • Usage-based or subscription billing systems.
  • A modern accounting and spend stack, and BI tools.
  • Technical program management (especially FinOps or fintech), product management, or a past founder or first-of-function role.
  • Hardware unit economics, equipment financing, or other capital-intensive businesses.

What you need to know about the Boston Tech Scene

Boston is a powerhouse for technology innovation thanks to world-class research universities like MIT and Harvard and a robust pipeline of venture capital investment. Host to the first telephone call and one of the first general-purpose computers ever put into use, Boston is now a hub for biotechnology, robotics and artificial intelligence — though it’s also home to several B2B software giants. So it’s no surprise that the city consistently ranks among the greatest startup ecosystems in the world.

Key Facts About Boston Tech

  • Number of Tech Workers: 269,000; 9.4% of overall workforce (2024 CompTIA survey)
  • Major Tech Employers: Thermo Fisher Scientific, Toast, Klaviyo, HubSpot, DraftKings
  • Key Industries: Artificial intelligence, biotechnology, robotics, software, aerospace
  • Funding Landscape: $15.7 billion in venture capital funding in 2024 (Pitchbook)
  • Notable Investors: Summit Partners, Volition Capital, Bain Capital Ventures, MassVentures, Highland Capital Partners
  • Research Centers and Universities: MIT, Harvard University, Boston College, Tufts University, Boston University, Northeastern University, Smithsonian Astrophysical Observatory, National Bureau of Economic Research, Broad Institute, Lowell Center for Space Science & Technology, National Emerging Infectious Diseases Laboratories
