Optum Health Technology is seeking an experienced AI Solution Architect to lead the architecture, design, and governance of enterprise-scale AI solutions that transform healthcare delivery, clinician experience, operational efficiency, and consumer engagement.
This role will partner closely with business leaders, product teams, engineering organizations, data scientists, and enterprise architects to define and implement AI-first technology strategies. The architect will design scalable, secure, and compliant solutions leveraging generative AI, agentic AI, machine learning, intelligent automation, cloud-native platforms, and healthcare data ecosystems.
The successful candidate will establish reference architectures, accelerate AI adoption across Optum Health, and ensure AI solutions align with responsible AI principles, regulatory requirements, and enterprise technology standards.
You'll enjoy the flexibility to work remotely * from anywhere within the U.S. as you take on some tough challenges. For all hires in the Minneapolis or Washington, D.C. area, you will be required to work in the office a minimum of four days per week.
Primary Responsibilities:
  • Lead end-to-end architecture for AI-powered healthcare solutions across clinical, operational, consumer, provider, and value-based care domains
  • Define enterprise AI architecture patterns, standards, guardrails, and reusable frameworks for GenAI, agentic AI, machine learning, and intelligent automation solutions
  • Design scalable architectures incorporating LLMs, RAG, knowledge graphs, vector databases, AI agents, orchestration frameworks, and healthcare data platforms
  • Partner with business and product leaders to identify opportunities where AI can drive meaningful business and healthcare outcomes
  • Establish AI platform integration patterns leveraging Azure AI services, cloud-native technologies, APIs, event-driven architectures, and enterprise applications
  • Has good underdstnading of US Healthcare domain, healthcare standards and platforms including FHIR, HL7, Epic, claims systems, provider systems, and clinical data platforms
  • Collaborate with AI engineering, MLOps, platform engineering, security, privacy, legal, and compliance teams to ensure production readiness
  • Define and implement Responsible AI controls including fairness, explainability, transparency, governance, risk management, and human-in-the-loop processes
  • Guide engineering teams on AI application design, prompt engineering strategies, agent orchestration patterns, model evaluation, and deployment architectures
  • Evaluate emerging AI technologies and industry trends to inform long-term Optum Health technology strategy
  • Influence enterprise-wide architectural decisions and provide technical leadership across multiple portfolios and business segments
  • Drive hands-on execution through rapid prototyping, proof-of-concept (PoC) development, and minimum viable product (MVP) implementations
  • Apply deep AIDLC understanding to establish, optimize, and standardize the AI Development Life Cycle across projects
  • Operates as a recognized AI architecture leader across Optum Health
  • Influences architecture decisions across multiple portfolios and business units
  • Balances innovation with risk management, compliance, security, and business value
  • Champions AI-first thinking and drives adoption of modern engineering and architecture practices
  • Mentors architects and engineers while fostering technical excellence and innovation
  • Communicates effectively with executive leadership, engineering teams, and business stakeholders

Required Qualifications:
  • 12+ years of experience in solution architecture, enterprise architecture, or software engineering roles
  • 3+ years of experience designing and delivering AI, machine learning, advanced analytics, or intelligent automation solutions
  • 1+ year of experience architecting solutions using Large Language Models (LLMs), Generative AI, Deep expertise on one of the Agentic Platform or framework such as LangGrph, Agno, Autogen, Retrieval Augmented Generation (RAG), AI agents, or conversational AI platforms, Guardrails
  • 1+ year of experience with vector databases, knowledge graphs, semantic search, and enterprise knowledge management platforms
  • 1+ year of experience with cloud platforms such as Azure, AWS, or GCP, including AI and data services
  • 1+ year of experience designing distributed, scalable, and resilient enterprise architectures
  • 1+ year of experience defining architecture standards, reference architectures, and technology governance processes
  • Proven experience leading cross-functional teams across product, engineering, architecture, and business organizations
  • Demonstrated ability to influence senior leaders and drive enterprise technology decisions

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Artificial Intelligence, Data Science or a related discipline
  • Healthcare industry experience across Optum Health, provider organizations, population health, value-based care, or payer platforms
  • Experience integrating healthcare systems utilizing HL7, FHIR, EHR platforms, claims systems, provider systems, or clinical applications
  • Experience deploying production-scale AI platforms and MLOps capabilities
  • Experience with Azure OpenAI, Microsoft Copilot technologies, and enterprise AI platforms

Pay is based on several factors including but not limited to local labor markets, education, work experience, certifications, etc. In addition to your salary, we offer benefits such as, a comprehensive benefits package, incentive and recognition programs, equity stock purchase and 401k contribution (all benefits are subject to eligibility requirements). No matter where or when you begin a career with us, you'll find a far-reaching choice of benefits and incentives. The salary for this role will range from $112,700 - $193,200 annually based on full-time employment. We comply with all minimum wage laws as applicable.
