Our Mission:

ButterflyMX is on a mission to empower people to open and manage doors & gates from a smartphone. Our products are installed in more than 20,000+ multifamily, commercial, gated communities, and student-housing properties worldwide, including properties developed, owned, and managed by the most trusted names in real estate. Our features are designed for developers, owners, property managers, and tenants and our products lower operating costs and improve tenant satisfaction.

Our Solution:

Developers and owners no longer need to run building wiring or install in-unit hardware. Property managers can grant building access, revoke permissions, and review entry logs from an online dashboard. Residents can open doors from their smartphones, issue visitor access, and see who is trying to enter the building.

Our Culture & Values:

Fantastic people are the key to our success. As a distributed, primarily remote workforce, we’re looking for more intelligent, passionate, collaborative, ai-forward, and down-to-earth individuals to join our growing team. We’re driven by a shared commitment to excellence and innovation, grounded in our core values: We delight our customers, We take ownership, We are a community of collaborators, We speak up, We think big and do small, and We are tenacious.

Role Overview:

ButteflyMX is hiring a first-in-company opportunity where you will get to embed AI directly into the heart of our software development process. You will accelerate engineering velocity, enhance code quality, and empower developers to leverage AI confidently and effectively. You’ll explore new tools, put best practices into action, and drive AI adoption across the full software development lifecycle (SDLC).

This is a hands-on role that blends technical curiosity, developer advocacy, and organizational change helping our engineering teams become faster, smarter, and more effective through AI.

It’s a rare chance to participate in a top-priority initiative from day one: turning executive vision into tangible AI solutions, shaping how our business operates, and enabling every team in the organization to work faster and smarter. You will be the bridge between cutting-edge AI and the internal community of development teams building a category-defining SaaS platform, directly shaping how engineers work every day, from code review to onboarding. Your influence will extend beyond tools to culture itself: how we evaluate, hire, and grow AI-fluent engineers.

The AI Enablement Engineer builds and maintains the infrastructure, tools, and platforms that empower teams across the organization to develop and deploy AI-powered features efficiently. This role focuses on creating reusable frameworks, internal developer tools, and educational resources that democratize AI capabilities, reduce implementation friction, and establish best practices for responsible AI usage at scale.

Responsibilities:
  • Build and maintain an internal LLM gateway that handles routing, fallbacks, and rate limiting
  • Create reusable components for common AI patterns (RAG, function calling, streaming responses)
  • Develop SDKs or libraries that simplify AI integration for application developers
  • Implement prompt management systems and evaluation frameworks
  • Design and deploy vector database infrastructure for semantic search
  • Create monitoring dashboards for AI usage, costs, and performance metrics
  • Write technical documentation and best practice guides for AI implementation
  • Evaluate and integrate new AI services and models as they become available
  • Build testing frameworks for prompt regression and model output validation
Requirements:
  • 3+ years of software engineering experience with strong focus on platform/infrastructure development
  • Hands-on experience with LLM APIs (OpenAI, Anthropic, etc.) and AI orchestration frameworks (OpenAI Agents SDK, Google ADK)
  • Proficiency in Python or TypeScript
  • Knowledge of vector databases, embedding models, and RAG architectures
  • Experience building internal developer tools, SDKs, or platform services
  • Understanding of API design, authentication, and rate limiting
  • Familiarity with cloud platforms (AWS, GCP) and containerization
  • Experience with observability, monitoring, and cost management for AI systems
  • Strong documentation and communication skills

Benefits
  • Comprehensive Medical (ButterflyMX covers 90% of the cost), Dental, and Vision plans (ButterflyMX covers 100% of the cost) starting day 1
  • 401(k) plan with a match
  • 13 paid holidays and 25 days PTO
  • Paid Family Leave
  • Employee Assistance Program
  • Quarterly self-care stipends
  • HealthAdvocacy Program
  • Access to optional benefits including pre-tax flexible healthcare spending accounts (FSA and HSA), Dependent Care FSA, and Commuter Benefits, as well as optional Supplemental Life, AD&D, Hospital Indemnity, Disability, Legal, Accident, Critical Illness, Pet, and Personal Liability Insurance
  • Collaborative, dynamic work environment filled with kind, smart people, who are working hard on an industry-defining product

We do not discriminate on the basis of race, religion, color, national origin, gender, sexual orientation, age, marital status, veteran status, or disability status. What you need to know about the Boston Tech Scene

Boston is a powerhouse for technology innovation thanks to world-class research universities like MIT and Harvard and a robust pipeline of venture capital investment. Host to the first telephone call and one of the first general-purpose computers ever put into use, Boston is now a hub for biotechnology, robotics and artificial intelligence — though it’s also home to several B2B software giants. So it’s no surprise that the city consistently ranks among the greatest startup ecosystems in the world.

Key Facts About Boston Tech

  • Number of Tech Workers: 269,000; 9.4% of overall workforce (2024 CompTIA survey)
  • Major Tech Employers: Thermo Fisher Scientific, Toast, Klaviyo, HubSpot, DraftKings
  • Key Industries: Artificial intelligence, biotechnology, robotics, software, aerospace
  • Funding Landscape: $15.7 billion in venture capital funding in 2024 (Pitchbook)
  • Notable Investors: Summit Partners, Volition Capital, Bain Capital Ventures, MassVentures, Highland Capital Partners
  • Research Centers and Universities: MIT, Harvard University, Boston College, Tufts University, Boston University, Northeastern University, Smithsonian Astrophysical Observatory, National Bureau of Economic Research, Broad Institute, Lowell Center for Space Science & Technology, National Emerging Infectious Diseases Laboratories
