Backed by artificial intelligence and machine learning, medical equipment startup FundamentalVR is on a mission to help surgeons practice their skills virtually without risking injury to patients.

The London-based company, which has local roots in Boston, announced Thursday that it has pulled in a $20 million Series B funding round to scale its VR surgery training technology.

The round, led by EQT Life Sciences, brings the company’s total funding to date to $30 million.

Similar to the way a user can put on a virtual reality headset and experience an alternate universe, FundamentalVR allows surgeons to experience a lifelike, virtual reality surgery.

According to a company statement, FundamentalVR’s HapticVR technology mirrors the physical touch of surgery and allows surgeons to experience the sights, sounds and physical sensations of real-life surgery.

“Our platform can conduct a walkthrough of a procedure through to a full operation, facilitating surgical skills transfer – which is why we have been enthusiastically embraced throughout the medical industry, from med-device manufacturers to pharmaceuticals,” FundamentalVR co-founder Richard Vincent said in a statement. “Our immersive environments transform surgical skills acquisition in a scalable, low-cost, multiuser way. We are excited to scale our vision of creating a medical education environment unhindered by borders.”

The company will use its new capital to further develop its HapticVR product offerings and expand its machine learning data insight products. Additional funding will go toward further expansion throughout the U.S. FundamentalVR’s technology is also available in 30 other countries.
