Leading the Pack: 12 Boston Companies Hiring Now

On the third Monday of the past 126 Aprils, runners from all walks of life made the pilgrimage from rural Hopkinton, down Route 135, through Ashland, Framingham, Newton Hills and Brookline, to the famously verdant Copley Square. For 26.2 sweaty miles the Boston Marathoners persist — following the historical path of the Patriot’s Day runners before them.

Boston has an affinity for traditions like its marathon, but that doesn’t stop one of America’s oldest cities from housing some of the fastest-growing companies in tech.

Not far from the finish line is Amazon’s Bostonian hub, which is slated to complete its expansion in the next two years. Hubspot, Acquia, PathAI, Embark and more are all located within a five-mile radius. With CB Insights reporting a record-breaking $32 billion year of funding for Beantown startups in 2021 — and 2022 poised to match — there has never been a better time to join the Boston tech scene.

Built In Boston curated a list of 12 burgeoning tech companies, all of which are hiring now. For job seekers looking to put their best foot forward in AI, edtech and beyond, these industry leaders are career destinations.

Lovers of platitudes will tell you that your career is a marathon, not a sprint — and they would be right. We talked with leaders in Boston tech to learn more about what they look for in professionals hoping to join their teams for the long haul.

Rebecca Stella
Sr. Manager, Corporate Marketing • PathAI

PathAI is a biotech company that seeks to improve patient outcomes via AI-powered technology.

What’s one word you would use to describe your colleagues?

Collaborative. This is a trait that I look for in my colleagues, especially during my interview process. Success stems from the collaboration that occurs within a team. If I am to succeed in my role, I need to lean on the strengths of my colleagues — a lot of that comes through collaboration.

I enjoy colleagues who are open minded and are willing to let me bounce ideas off them. I appreciate different viewpoints that others bring to the table and being able to grow alongside one another.

Artificial intelligence is allowing us to do what was not possible a decade ago.

Why is your industry an exciting place to work right now?

The biotech industry is always on the edge of something new. People working in this industry are discovering and developing innovative solutions to solve some of the biggest challenges researchers, providers and patients are facing in healthcare today.

That is exactly what we’re doing at PathAI. Artificial intelligence is allowing us to do what was not possible a decade ago. PathAI’s machine learning algorithms aid in the development of new drugs and serve as a diagnostic tool to more accurately diagnose patients and get them on the treatments they need sooner.

Shibani Peterson
Global Senior Manager, Talent Acquisition • Acquia

Acquia is an open-source software company that provides digital experiences to forward-thinking brands.

What’s one word you would use to describe your colleagues?

Passion. I’m so lucky to work at Acquia — everyone is so passionate about what they do. I recently went to our sales and marketing kickoff and had the chance to attend sessions with our global teams. Being there reiterated how smart, curious and creative my colleagues are.

Spending time with people who are genuinely excited by what they do is infectious. As a Global Senior Manager of Talent Acquisition, I get to contribute to hiring people who have integrity, dare to be different, jump into challenges and — as we say at Acquia — are “committed to awesome.”

As consumers, we all know the importance of a great digital experience. At Acquia, we get to be part of enhancing that experience.

Why is your industry an exciting place to work right now?

The software industry is characterized by innovation and constant evolution, which makes the work we do at Acquia interesting and challenging. The martech space is particularly cool because our technology helps customers better reach their own customers and employees.

Ellevation Education

Sandra Gilbert
Manager, Campus Engagement • Ellevation Education

Ellevation Education is a web-based software platform designed for educators and the English learners they serve.

What’s one word you would use to describe your colleagues?

Adaptable. If there is something the pandemic taught us is that we needed to find creative ways to connect and support educators by understanding their specific needs.

We exist because we believe every student in America deserves an opportunity to achieve — this is reflected in our hiring policies.

We hire people that advocate for equity and understand English language learners on a deeper level. Many team members were English language learners themselves! We collaborate and iterate as many times as needed to ensure our solutions are hitting the target for all the educators and students we serve.

We strive to build diverse teams, to learn from all experiences, backgrounds and talents, and to constantly question the status quo. We are in the business of enriching our partners’ journeys every step of the way.

Donating to the Red Cross won’t cut it anymore. These students need allies that will work for their success in a new country.

Why is your industry an exciting place to work right now?

This is the best time to work at Ellevation! If you are wondering how you can support the rest of the world right now, our mission is for you. Our country is changing rapidly: We are welcoming so many new English language learners from around the world every day.

Donating to the Red Cross won’t cut it anymore. These students need allies that will work for their success in a new country.

Here, representation matters! As an advocate for multilingual education, you show English language learners how they can succeed in the future. If you learned another language growing up and understand the challenges these students face, we are waiting for you.

Imagine telling a student that you were an English language learner just like them a few years ago. Your impact can change trajectories worldwide — one student at a time.

We look for people who care for our members like we do.

Why is your industry an exciting place to work right now?

Our industry is an exciting place to work right now because of how much the job market has changed during Covid-19. Many of the workers most affected by the pandemic are a part of the Jobcase community. We provide access to the jobs and support they need to get ahead. As a popular online career resource in the US, Jobcase is well-positioned to help connect and empower workers.

Jobcase also empowers employees in-house as well. Starting this job out of college, I have been given multiple opportunities to grow my skill set and career, both technically and personally — something I am very appreciative of.

Why is your industry an exciting place to work right now?

With our acquisition of HealthSparq last year, we are now enabling unprecedented payer-provider connectivity to make it easier for people to navigate and schedule care — regardless of where they start their search. We are also building momentum in emerging markets, including partnerships with other digital health companies and new channels for data distribution and online appointment scheduling.

Weiru Chen
Machine Learning Engineer • Cohere Health

Cohere Health is a technology company that aims to eliminate administrative burden from healthcare.

What’s one word you would use to describe your colleagues?

Driven. Everyone here is incredibly hard working and ambitious — they are motivated to use machine learning and NLP skills to create great impact in the clinical field and improve the healthcare industry. They constantly set reachable targets, make gradual improvements and always know what to prioritize in order to reach the goal.

When looking for potential colleagues, I seek out enthusiasm and creativity. Potential colleagues should have something that we can learn from. I hope that they are easy to collaborate with and passionate about improving the US healthcare system.

We also have the opportunity to attend renowned machine learning conferences.

How has your skill set and overall career grown at this company?

Since working at Cohere, I have developed both my technical and soft skills. Through various feature extraction projects, I have learned state-of-the-art techniques for information retrieval in healthcare NLP and have developed more software engineering skills — such as implementing scalable pipelines for the machine learning models.

We also have the opportunity to attend renowned machine learning conferences, where I gained more domain knowledge and studied the latest breakthrough techniques.

I have also developed leadership skills. Prior to working at Cohere, I rarely had the opportunity to take ownership of projects. Although collaboration is still highly advocated, we never lack the chance to take the lead on projects.

Everyone is always willing to lend a hand or jump on a call to explain something.

How has your skill set and overall career grown at this company?

LogicManager has given me the opportunity to grow throughout my time here. I started out in a customer support role, where I learned an enormous amount about effective communication. There, I was able to work on side projects that allowed me to discover where I wanted to grow within the company. I was then able to transition to the Product team and use my skills in new and exciting ways.

Senior Director of Content • Embark Veterinary

Embark Veterinary is a pet healthtech platform that educates pet owners about their dog’s breed, health and ancestry with canine DNA technology.

What’s one word you would use to describe your colleagues?

Empathetic. My colleagues at Embark are unusually good listeners and incredibly thoughtful about what their colleagues and customers may be experiencing. I am consistently impressed with them — but maybe it isn’t surprising that people who want to work at a company where they can improve the lives of dogs and dog owners are especially considerate.

I really believe that we are doing fascinating, cutting-edge science that can have a huge impact on canine health and deepen our overall understanding of genetics and disease.

Why is your industry an exciting place to work right now, and what role does your company play within it?

The space that Embark Veterinary occupies is so exciting. I really believe that we are doing fascinating, cutting-edge science that can have a huge impact on canine health and deepen our overall understanding of genetics and disease.

Allissa Chan
Product Manager • Paddle

Profitwell is a fintech company that helps companies solve the most complicated aspects of growth in subscription technology.

What’s one word you would use to describe your colleagues?

Diligent. Everyone at ProfitWell cares tremendously about what they do and their impact on the greater team. I’ve seen Engineers ask to be a part of product marketing conversations to better understand the decisions behind how we position the features they build. I’ve seen Creative Producers ask to join customer support calls to learn how to better tailor our content to resonate with our users.

We foster an environment that is very collaborative and encourages individuals to be their best. People are most successful at ProfitWell when they are unafraid to venture out of their lane to learn, think critically and be disagreeable. We need folks who are willing to challenge the status quo and not settle for the path of least resistance.

We need folks who are willing to challenge the status quo and not settle for the path of least resistance.

How has your skill set and overall career grown at this company?

One of the best things about working at ProfitWell is how hard the company strives to grow individuals into roles that they’ll not only love but thrive in. When I first joined the company, I worked on content and event production with the media team. Two years in, I wanted to pivot to a career in product and was met with an overwhelming amount of guidance and support.

The creative design expertise that I gained from my previous role gives me a unique edge. Being able to quickly communicate ideas visually to engineering and design teams has made collaboration infinitely more efficient. Given the multifaceted nature of the PM role at ProfitWell, I have gained skills in areas that I never dreamed of, like customer success and sales.

After less than two years of project managing at ProfitWell, I now own the roadmap and lead development for one of our three core products: Retain. It’s been a wild ride, and I can't wait to see what the next few years have in store.
