Vicarious Surgical Raises $13M, Driverless Car Maker Plans Hiring Surge, and More

Vicarious Surgical raises $13.2M. The Gates-funded startup combines virtual reality and robotics to “virtually transport” surgeons inside a patient, enabling them to perform minimally invasive surgery using its patented VR headset and controllers. The round was led by E15 Capital and will be used to further develop Vicarious’ product and grow its team. [Built In Boston]

Hyundai-Aptiv joint venture rebrands, plans hiring surge. Now operating under the name Motional, the $4 billion joint venture plans to test its fully autonomous vehicles for ride-hailing services later this year and have them deployed by 2022. The company is also growing its headcount by 45 percent, with open positions listed at its Boston headquarters and offices in Santa Monica, Pittsburgh, Las Vegas, Singapore and Seoul. Amwell gets a new CTO. The telehealth company has appointed Serkan Kutan as its new chief technology officer to continue serving the needs of hospitals, health systems, health plans and patients throughout the country. An industry veteran, Kutan has worked in executive leadership roles at the likes of Haven and Zocdoc. [Press Release]

Root AI raises $7.2M seed. The Wodburn-based startup aims to make the farming industry more efficient and sustainable with its AI-enabled robots that can not only pick produce, but also collect and analyze crop data. The company plans to deploy its tech across North America in the next year. [Built In Boston]

Lumeon lands $30M. The startup aims to put the healthcare system on “autopilot” with its Care Pathway Management tool. This round brings Lumeon’s total funding raised to more than $48 million and will be used to help the company expand its footprint and team, with plans to hire about 50 new people in the next year. Boston tech companies land on the Inc. 5000. This year’s Inc. 5000 list dropped earlier this week, and 75 Boston-area companies made the cut. All told, total revenue across all industries came out to more than $2 billion. [Built In Boston]
