We are seeking a VP, Engineering who thrives in fast-paced, product-driven environments and excels at taking products from concept to launch. This leader combines strategic thinking with hands-on technical expertise and is comfortable rolling up their sleeves to architect, code, debug, and guide teams through ambiguity.

As the senior-most engineering leader, you will shape the technical vision, build a high-performing engineering organization, and drive execution across product development, infrastructure, and engineering operations. You will partner closely with Product, Design, and Business leaders to deliver scalable, reliable, and secure solutions.

This role is ideal for a builder who has successfully led teams through 0 → 1 product development, enjoys solving hard problems, and can balance short-term delivery with long-term architectural stability.

What You'll Do (Technical Leadership & Strategy):

  • Help define and execute the engineering strategy and technical roadmap aligned to company objectives.
  • Lead system architecture decisions to ensure scalability, resilience, and long-term maintainability.
  • Provide hands-on technical leadership—diving into code, architecture, infrastructure, and complex problem-solving when needed.
  • Ensure engineering best practices, including code quality, testing standards, deployment processes, and security guidelines.

What You'll Do (Product Execution & Operational Excellence)

  • Lead engineering execution from ideation through launch, overseeing full product lifecycles in a 0→1 environment.
  • Collaborate with Product and Design to define requirements, scope features, and build predictable roadmaps.
  • Drive delivery excellence—ensuring high velocity, clear accountability, and data-driven prioritization.
  • Oversee engineering processes, sprint planning, and resource allocation.
  • Strengthen DevOps, observability, continuous integration/delivery pipelines, and on-call reliability.
  • Ensure security, compliance, data protection, and architectural governance

What You'll Do (Team Leadership & Cross-Functional Collaboration)

  • Build, scale, and mentor a high-impact engineering organization (internal, contract, nearshore, or hybrid).
  • Establish a culture of ownership, innovation, technical rigor, and continuous improvement.
  • Recruit top engineering talent and develop career paths, performance standards, and scalable organizational structures.
  • Partner with Product, Design, Operations, and Executive teams to align engineering initiatives with business priorities.
  • Communicate technical decisions, tradeoffs, and impacts clearly to both technical and non-technical stakeholders.
  • Champion cross-functional collaboration, transparency, and high-quality execution across teams

Who You Are (Qualifications):

  • 10+ years of hands-on engineering experience, with deep technical expertise in modern technologies, cloud-native approaches, and extensible architecture.
  • 5+ years leading engineering teams, including experience as a Director, Head of Engineering, or VP.
  • Proven record of building and launching 0→1 products in a startup or fast-growth environment.
  • Strong ability to switch between strategic planning and tactical execution.
  • Demonstrated expertise in system design, distributed systems, and cloud-native infrastructure (AWS).
  • Experience setting engineering culture, standards, and operational excellence.
  • Strong communication and stakeholder-management skills.
  •

How You Can Stand Out ("Preferred" Qualifications):

  • Experience in SaaS, AI/ML, B2B, or enterprise products (tailor to your product).
  • Ability to manage hybrid engineering teams (contract/agency + in-house).
  • Experience with security, compliance, or highly regulated environments if relevant to your product.
  • Prior experience scaling engineering teams from early-stage to growth-stage.

Host to the first telephone call and one of the first general-purpose computers ever put into use, Boston is now a hub for biotechnology, robotics and artificial intelligence — though it’s also home to several B2B software giants. So it’s no surprise that the city consistently ranks among the greatest startup ecosystems in the world.

Key Facts About Boston Tech

  • Funding Landscape: $15.7 billion in venture capital funding in 2024 (Pitchbook)
  • Notable Investors: Summit Partners, Volition Capital, Bain Capital Ventures, MassVentures, Highland Capital Partners
  • Research Centers and Universities: MIT, Harvard University, Boston College, Tufts University, Boston University, Northeastern University, Smithsonian Astrophysical Observatory, National Bureau of Economic Research, Broad Institute, Lowell Center for Space Science & Technology, National Emerging Infectious Diseases Laboratories
