THE ROLE: Attorney – Vice President, Legal

Britebound is a national non-profit with a mission to support middle and high school learners to explore their interests, experience potential careers, and navigate a path to a meaningful and rewarding future. We fulfill our mission through free digital-first experiences, grantmaking, policy advocacy, research, and impact investing.

We believe that exploring career possibilities, as early as middle school, and providing access to education-to-career pathways aligned with one’s passions and goals will result in greater confidence and long-term success for all students.

We are looking for an experienced and strategic attorney to serve as Vice President, Legal for our nonprofit organization. Reporting to the Executive Vice President, this role provides comprehensive legal support and counsel across the organization and its supported organizations. The Vice President, Legal will oversee a broad portfolio of corporate legal matters, including nonprofit and tax law, corporate governance, regulatory compliance, lobbying, intellectual property, data privacy, employment matters, and transactional work.

Both hands-on and advisory, the Vice President, Legal role represents an exciting opportunity for a strong legal generalist with expertise in nonprofit law, sound judgment and collaboration, and the ability to operate effectively in a nimble and mission-driven environment. You’ll be joining Britebound in a moment of growth and expanding positive impact on the lives, and future career prospects, of American students.

What You’ll Do:

  • Provide general corporate legal counsel on matters arising from the day-to-day operations of a tax-exempt nonprofit organization with multiple entities.
  • Advise on nonprofit governance best practices, including bylaws, policies, board structures, fiduciary duties, and conflicts of interest, to ensure continued compliance with 501(c)(3) requirements.
  • Serve as legal advisor to senior leadership and the Board of Directors on governance, risk management, and regulatory matters.
  • Engage as a strategic colleague and full member of the Executive Leadership Team.
  • Provide legal support on employment law matters, working closely with human resources and leadership.
  • Provide legal guidance on lobbying, advocacy, and other regulatory compliance matters applicable to nonprofit organizations.
  • Oversee domestic data privacy and data protection compliance, including advising on applicable laws and supporting the development and maintenance of compliance programs.
  • Draft, review, negotiate, and manage a wide range of contracts.
  • Manage the organization’s intellectual property portfolio, including trademarks and licensing arrangements.
  • Conduct legal research and analysis and provide clear, actionable legal advice across a broad range of issues.
  • Manage legal operations, including engagement and oversight of in-house Legal Counsel and outside counsel; effectively and responsibly coordinate the legal budget.

About You:

  • Juris Doctor (J.D.) from an accredited law school. You must be an active member in good standing of at least one U.S. state bar.
  • Deep general corporate legal practice experience, with demonstrated expertise in nonprofit law and tax-exempt organizations. Strong preference for candidates bringing a blend of experiences: in-house at a large foundation or non-profit (ideally with multiple entities) and a large law firm.
  • Interacting with, and supporting, boards on corporate governance and risk.
  • Managing multiple priorities and meeting deadlines in a fast-paced environment.
  • Providing strong judgment, discretion, and advice. With a problem solving orientation, you can point to tangible examples of enabling an organization's growth and evolution as well as leadership’s decision making.
  • Researching and drafting legal advice that you have effectively communicated to multiple audiences.
  • A current understanding of best practices related to data privacy laws, particularly related to 11–19-year-olds.
  • A collaborative, entrepreneurial and resourceful mindset, alongside exceptional relationship-building skills.
  • Strong commitment to Britebound’s mission and objectives.
  • An ability to work from our Boston office at least two days per week.

  • Funding Landscape: $15.7 billion in venture capital funding in 2024 (Pitchbook)
  • Notable Investors: Summit Partners, Volition Capital, Bain Capital Ventures, MassVentures, Highland Capital Partners
  • Research Centers and Universities: MIT, Harvard University, Boston College, Tufts University, Boston University, Northeastern University, Smithsonian Astrophysical Observatory, National Bureau of Economic Research, Broad Institute, Lowell Center for Space Science & Technology, National Emerging Infectious Diseases Laboratories
