About the Program

The Vertex Physician Investigator (VPI) Program is a full-time, immersive opportunity for exceptional early-career physician-scientists who are passionate about solving unmet medical needs and advancing transformative science. Over two years, participants will complete four customized six-month rotations, receive intensive training, and benefit from direct mentorship by Vertex senior leaders.

This program is designed to provide a broad understanding of the drug development process and prepare participants for future leadership roles in biotechnology.

Program Highlights

Four Rotations Over Two Years

  • Two mandatory rotations: Drug Discovery and Clinical Development
  • Two elective rotations in other Vertex functions of the participant’s choice

Training & Mentorship

  • Intensive didactic training on the science and business of drug development
  • Peer-to-peer learning and mentorship from Vertex senior leaders
  • Career guidance and leadership development

Post-Program Opportunity

  • Upon completion, participants will transition into a mutually selected full-time role at Vertex

Eligibility Requirements

  • MD or MD/PhD with completed residency/fellowship
  • ≤5 years post-residency/fellowship
  • Demonstrated scientific and investigative impact (e.g., peer-reviewed publications, awards)
  • Evidence of creative thinking, problem-solving, and innovation
  • Willingness to work in Vertex’s Boston office (relocation assistance available)
  • Strong communication, teamwork, and leadership skills
  • Interest in drug discovery, clinical research, and commercialization
  • Ability to bring diverse perspectives and experiences to Vertex

Pay Range:

$192,000 - $288,000

Disclosure Statement:

The range provided is based on what we believe is a reasonable estimate for the base salary pay range for this job at the time of posting. This role is eligible for an annual bonus and annual equity awards. Some roles may also be eligible for overtime pay, in accordance with federal and state requirements. Actual base salary pay will be based on a number of factors, including skills, competencies, experience, and other job-related factors permitted by law.
