Job Description

Usability Engineer

In this role, you will be responsible for ensuring that the Philips solutions are safe, effective, efficient, intuitive, and satisfactory to use. You will be advocating for usability & user-centered design, and prioritizing user needs and patient safety in the business and project team.

Your role:

  • ​Define and execute the usability engineering approach across product development, including creation of usability engineering plans. Coordinate required activities and resources to ensure usability is embedded throughout all design and development phases.
  • Conduct user research and develop use scenarios, task analyses, and workflows. Evaluate cognitive, physical, and situational use contexts using a systems-thinking approach to inform intuitive, safe, and efficient user experiences.
  • Plan, conduct, and document formative and summative usability studies in compliance with applicable privacy and usability standards. Manage study logistics, participant recruitment, informed consent, and site requirements.
  • Perform usability risk analyses to identify, document, and mitigate potential use errors. Analyze post-market feedback and data to prioritize usability improvements and enhance user satisfaction.
  • Compile Human Factors Engineering (HFE) reports and usability documentation to support regulatory submissions. Communicate usability findings and recommendations to cross-functional teams including R&D, Clinical, UI/UX, and Systems Engineering.

You're the right fit if:

  • You’ve acquired 5+ years of experience in usability engineering, UX design, usability testing, or an equivalent role, medical device experience required.
  • Your skills include with Usability standards and guidelines such as IEC 62366, FDA Guidance for Human-Factors and HE75; human-centered design methods, such as focus groups, interviews, contextual inquiries, usability evaluation, documentation, and reporting; usability experience from relevant companies, agencies, institutions, or in consultancy work.
  • You have a Bachelor's degree in Human Factors Engineering, Human-Computer Interaction (HCI), Design Research or related discipline, required.
  • You must be able to successfully perform the following minimum Physical, Cognitive and Environmental job requirements with or without accommodation for this position.
  • You able to work independently on project activities, driving efficiency, and facilitating design quality reviews, willing to work together with or consult business stakeholders, actively manage relationships, challenge the status quo to drive innovation, and step up for the user. Have the ability to travel internationally for workshops and Usability studies at least 2 times per year. You are fluent in English.

How we work together

We believe that we are better together than apart. For our office-based teams, this means working in-person at least 3 days per week. Onsite roles require full-time presence in the company’s facilities. Field roles are most effectively done outside of the company’s main facilities, generally at the customers’ or suppliers’ locations.

Philips Transparency Details

The pay range for this position in Cambridge, MA is $128,500 to $205,600.00.

The actual base pay offered may vary within the posted ranges depending on multiple factors including job-related knowledge/skills, experience, business needs, geographical location, and internal equity.   

In addition, other compensation, such as an annual incentive bonus, sales commission or long-term incentives may be offered.  Employees are eligible to participate in our comprehensive Philips Total Rewards benefits program, which includes a generous PTO, 401k (up to 7% match), HSA (with company contribution), stock purchase plan, education reimbursement and much more.  Details about our benefits can be found here. 

At Philips, it is not typical for an individual to be hired at or near the top end of the range for their role and compensation decisions are dependent upon the facts and circumstances of each case.

US work authorization is a precondition of employment. The company will not consider candidates who require sponsorship for a work-authorized visa, now or in the future.

Company relocation benefits will not be provided for this position.  For this position, you must reside in or within commuting distance to Cambridge, MA.
