About Us:

Collaborative autonomy is how self-tasking teams of machines will solve hard human problems, and HavocAI is an unquestioned leader in collaborative autonomy. We set the standard for autonomous surface vessels for a wide range of defense and commercial maritime missions. Success requires us to grow quickly, and we’re looking for teammates who are passionate about solving hard problems, about pushing the envelope, and about preventing conflict and saving lives. Ambition is welcome to apply within.

About the Role:

We are seeking an experienced Technical Writer to create and maintain high-quality documentation that makes HavocAI’s advanced systems understandable, usable, and mission-ready. In this role, you’ll work closely with engineers, product managers, and operators across autonomy, embedded systems, integration, Test, and support to own the documentation process end-to-end—from planning through publication. Your writing will accelerate onboarding, partner integration, and operational effectiveness, ensuring that both technical and non-technical audiences can confidently operate and maintain our systems.
This role sets the standard for technical communication at HavocAI. You’ll establish and enforce documentation practices, ensuring our content is accurate, consistent, and delivered in lockstep with product milestones.

Key Responsibilities and Requirements:
  • Own the documentation process—from planning, drafting, and editing to publication and ongoing maintenance.

  • Develop and maintain technical content including API references, system overviews, user guides, quick-start manuals, integration guides, and configuration checklists.

  • Translate complex engineering concepts into clear, accessible documentation tailored for diverse audiences—operators, engineers, and program managers.

  • Partner with engineering, product, and design teams to identify documentation needs and proactively close gaps.

  • Create and enforce style guides, templates, and documentation standards to ensure consistency across all materials.

  • Review, edit, and validate technical content for accuracy, usability, and clarity.

  • Manage documentation timelines alongside product development cycles, ensuring delivery aligns with milestones.

  • Continuously improve documentation based on user feedback, lessons learned from deployments, and evolving system requirements.

  • Contribute to building the technical writing function at HavocAI as the company scales, mentoring teammates and expanding documentation infrastructure.

Qualifications:
  • Bachelor’s degree in Technical Writing, English, Engineering, Computer Science, or a related field.

  • 3–7 years of experience as a technical writer, preferably in defense, aerospace, robotics, or similarly complex engineering environments.

  • Exceptional writing, editing, and information design skills with a track record of simplifying highly technical subject matter.

  • Demonstrated ability to take ownership of documentation projects and deliver them end-to-end.

  • Experience documenting software systems, APIs, or hardware/software interfaces.

  • Familiarity with Linux, Git, Markdown, and terminal-based workflows; experience with “docs-as-code” practices strongly preferred.

  • Excellent collaboration skills with engineers, operators, and product managers.

  • Strong organizational and project management abilities; comfortable balancing multiple deliverables in fast-moving environments.

  • Must be a U.S. Citizen and eligible to obtain a Secret Clearance.

  • Must be able to travel up to 20%

Preferred Skills:
  • Experience with robotics, autonomy, defense, or other high-complexity engineering domains.

  • Familiarity with ROS, embedded systems, or autonomy-related tools.

  • Proficiency with documentation platforms and generators (Confluence, Sphinx, Doxygen, MkDocs, etc.).

  • Experience building documentation portals, knowledge bases, or interactive training platforms.

  • Visual communication skills (e.g., system architecture diagrams, workflow illustrations).

  • Technical familiarity with front-end development (JavaScript, CSS, SSGs, templating).

Benefits:
  • 100% Employer paid Health, Dental and Vision Insurance for you and your families

  • Life Insurance

  • Ability to participate in the companies 401k program

  • Unlimited PTO policy with an enforced 2 week minimum

  • Equity Package

  • Work / Home Office Stipend

  • Global Entry

  • 16 Week Paid Parental Leave

  • Monthly Health and Wellness Stipend

Our Values:
  • Innovation: We are driven to break new ground. Every day presents an opportunity to challenge the status quo, think boldly, and deliver advanced solutions that transform the future of defense technology.

  • Integrity: We hold ourselves to the highest ethical standards, ensuring transparency, accountability, and trust in all our actions and partnerships.

  • Mission-Driven: We are focused on achieving impactful outcomes that align with our core mission—protecting lives through innovation.

  • Forward-Leaning: We continuously seek out new opportunities and remain at the forefront of technological advancements. We embrace change and anticipate the challenges of tomorrow with confidence and creativity.

  • Ownership of All Tasks: At HavocAI, no problem is too complex or too trivial. We believe that greatness comes from tackling the hardest challenges, but also in handling the smallest, sometimes thankless, tasks with the same level of commitment and care.

  • Servant Leadership: We lead by serving others, whether it’s supporting our employees, partners, or the broader community. Empowering those around us is key to achieving long-term success and making a lasting impact.

HavocAI is an Equal Opportunity Employer and is committed to creating an inclusive and diverse workplace. We welcome applicants from all backgrounds and do not discriminate based on race, color, religion, gender, sexual orientation, age, national origin, disability, veteran status, or any other legally protected status.

What you need to know about the Boston Tech Scene

Boston is a powerhouse for technology innovation thanks to world-class research universities like MIT and Harvard and a robust pipeline of venture capital investment. Host to the first telephone call and one of the first general-purpose computers ever put into use, Boston is now a hub for biotechnology, robotics and artificial intelligence — though it’s also home to several B2B software giants. So it’s no surprise that the city consistently ranks among the greatest startup ecosystems in the world.

Key Facts About Boston Tech

  • Number of Tech Workers: 269,000; 9.4% of overall workforce (2024 CompTIA survey)
  • Major Tech Employers: Thermo Fisher Scientific, Toast, Klaviyo, HubSpot, DraftKings
  • Key Industries: Artificial intelligence, biotechnology, robotics, software, aerospace
  • Funding Landscape: $15.7 billion in venture capital funding in 2024 (Pitchbook)
  • Notable Investors: Summit Partners, Volition Capital, Bain Capital Ventures, MassVentures, Highland Capital Partners
  • Research Centers and Universities: MIT, Harvard University, Boston College, Tufts University, Boston University, Northeastern University, Smithsonian Astrophysical Observatory, National Bureau of Economic Research, Broad Institute, Lowell Center for Space Science & Technology, National Emerging Infectious Diseases Laboratories
