The opportunity: Technical Writer / AI Specialist (Contract)
Tilt is hiring for a 3-6 month contract role to join our Business Intelligence team and help build the foundation of context management for our AI systems. You’ll turn complex product and data knowledge into crisp, reusable documentation (ex. column-level meanings, relationships, constraints, value ranges) that powers analytics and AI use cases. This role is a strong fit for an experienced technical writer - whether you already work with AI or are ready to pivot - who brings structured thinking and editorial precision to complex data.
Please include a link to your portfolio with your application. This role is a contract position and does not include Tilt employee benefits.
How you'll make an impact
Create and maintain data dictionaries, schema/lineage notes, and field-level documentation (definitions, valid values, units, caveats, owners)
Establish a context management framework: templates, style guides, versioning, and review workflows for AI- and BI-ready documentation
Partner cross-functionally with both technical and customer-facing teams to capture how products work from a customer perspective and translate that into precise data context
Document and operationalize canonical metrics and source-of-truth tables by coordinating with metric owners; clarify relationships across datasets and services
Produce concise, reusable context snippets for AI applications (ex. descriptions, guardrails, and FAQs) and improve them via iteration and user feedback
Audit existing docs and dashboards for accuracy and consistency; flag issues and coordinate corrections and deprecations
Why you're a great fit
3-5 years of technical writing experience in software/data environments, with a track record of independently driving docs from discovery through publication
Ability to simplify complex concepts, enforcing consistency and elevating clarity - comfortably editing beyond AI-generated drafts
Comfortable reading schemas and discussing data with engineers/analysts; familiarity with SQL fundamentals and BI concepts
Strong stakeholder-management skills; able to synthesize input from PMs, engineers, and customer-facing teams
Deep interest in AI and how high-quality context improves AI/analytics outcomes; you use AI tools but apply sound editorial judgment
Organized and detail-oriented; you operate independently day-to-day with clear goals, regular check-ins, and crisp communication
