Position Summary:

We are seeking a highly skilled and experienced Technical Artist with a specialization in character shader development for Unity and/or mobile platforms. In this role, you will be the bridge between art and engineering, responsible for creating, optimizing, and implementing high-quality shaders and material workflows within the Unity Engine’s Universal Rendering Pipeline (URP). Your expertise will be crucial in defining the game's visual style, empowering the art team with powerful tools, and ensuring our game runs beautifully and efficiently across a diverse spectrum of mobile devices.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Shader Authoring & Mobile Optimization: Design, write, and maintain a wide range of complex shaders using HLSL/ShaderLab, specifically optimized for mobile GPUs and the Unity Universal Render Pipeline (URP).

  • Mobile Performance Tuning: Profile and debug shader performance and memory usage on target iOS and Android hardware.

  • Material Library Development: Create and manage a library of master materials and shaders that are flexible, artist-friendly, and built with mobile performance as a primary consideration.

  • Tool Development: Develop custom tools, editor extensions, and scripts (C#) within Unity to improve and streamline the art content pipeline.

  • Look Development: Partner with the artists to establish the game's final look, developing key visual features that are both stunning and achievable within the constraints of mobile platforms.

Requirements:
  • 5+ years of experience in the games industry as a Technical Artist, with a portfolio showcasing significant shader development work on mobile titles.

  • Proven experience shipping and supporting at least one Unity/mobile game in a technical art role.

  • Experience with hero character materials (hair, skin, eyes, various outfit fabrics)

  • Proficient in C# scripting for creating editor tools and extensions within Unity.

  • In-depth knowledge of mobile GPU architectures and the unique performance challenges they present (e.g., tile-based rendering, bandwidth limitations).

  • Experience with mobile-specific performance analysis and optimization tools (e.g., Unity Profiler, Xcode Frame Capture, Android GPU Inspector, RenderDoc).

  • A strong artistic eye and the ability to create beautiful visuals within tight technical budgets.

Nice to Haves:
  • Familiarity with the Unity Engine and experience with the Universal Render Pipeline

  • Strong proficiency with Unity's Shader Graph and authoring performant custom nodes.

  • Experience with low-level mobile graphics APIs like Metal or Vulkan.

  • Familiarity with addressing device-specific rendering issues and fragmentation across the Android ecosystem.

We encourage you to apply even if you don’t need to meet every requirement. If you have relevant skills and interest, we welcome your application.

What you need to know about the Boston Tech Scene

Boston is a powerhouse for technology innovation thanks to world-class research universities like MIT and Harvard and a robust pipeline of venture capital investment. Host to the first telephone call and one of the first general-purpose computers ever put into use, Boston is now a hub for biotechnology, robotics and artificial intelligence — though it’s also home to several B2B software giants. So it’s no surprise that the city consistently ranks among the greatest startup ecosystems in the world.

Key Facts About Boston Tech

  • Number of Tech Workers: 269,000; 9.4% of overall workforce (2024 CompTIA survey)
  • Major Tech Employers: Thermo Fisher Scientific, Toast, Klaviyo, HubSpot, DraftKings
  • Key Industries: Artificial intelligence, biotechnology, robotics, software, aerospace
  • Funding Landscape: $15.7 billion in venture capital funding in 2024 (Pitchbook)
  • Notable Investors: Summit Partners, Volition Capital, Bain Capital Ventures, MassVentures, Highland Capital Partners
  • Research Centers and Universities: MIT, Harvard University, Boston College, Tufts University, Boston University, Northeastern University, Smithsonian Astrophysical Observatory, National Bureau of Economic Research, Broad Institute, Lowell Center for Space Science & Technology, National Emerging Infectious Diseases Laboratories
