QUALIFICATIONS

  • 8+ years of public accounting experience with a concentration in State & Local Tax.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to explain complex state & local tax concepts to clients and team members.
  • Working knowledge of tax software and research tools.
  • Excellent time management skills and the ability to work effectively with internal teams and clients.
  • CPA, EA, or law degree required; a master’s in taxation or LLM in Taxation is a plus.

OVERVIEW

Serves as the leader of the SALT Center of Excellence (COE) under the Tax Service Line, reporting to the National Tax Director, and ensuring technical excellence and client service standards are met within your COE.

Technical Expertise & Standards – Owns the technical guidance, thought leadership, and interpretation of tax law in SALT, including the development of standardized workpapers, templates, and best practices.

Quality Control & Risk Management – Guides the performance of quality control reviews within the COE on high-risk or complex tax returns and transactions, including the establishment of minimum documentation and process standards.

Training & Development – Develops and delivers, as applicable, firm-wide training programs, including the creation of structure learning paths for the development of expertise within their area of specialization and mentoring identified technical specialists within the Industry Solutions Groups.

Process Innovation & Efficiency – Evaluates and coordinates the implementation of technology tools within SALT, collaborating with Tax Operations to develop process improvements and efficiencies.

Resource to Solutions Groups – Oversees the consultative services provided by the COE to the Solutions Groups, supporting the development of client strategies and engagements where technical specialization is essential.

Collaboration with COEs – Collaborates with other Centers of Excellence on shared engagements, including high-priority clients with complex needs and multi-faceted engagements.

 External Representation – Oversees the publication by the COE of technical alerts, white papers, and articles, and represents the firm at conferences, roundtables, and professional associations within their area of specialization.


KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Leads SALT-only engagements where SALT is the driver of client service, and the service is not part of a broader compliance package

  • Performs nexus and apportionment studies

  • Acts as a resource for state and local tax controversy matters, and defines when SALT controls the interaction with state authorities

  • Develops SALT compliance tools, including resources to help the Solutions Groups identify potential state and local tax issues

  • Performs quality control (TAG) reviews of complex state and local tax returns, with complexity criteria defined by the SALT leader

  • Responsible for oversight of all sales and use tax compliance

  • Works with Industry Solutions Group Leaders and Market Leaders to establish pricing for all SALT engagements

  • Provides thought leadership on SALT topics

  • Performs specialized internal trainings on SALT topics identified by the SALT leader, in coordination with the firm’s learning department
