Are you passionate about making an impact on the education sector? Interested in working with companies, non-profits, institutions, and investors across the K-12, postsecondary, and corporate learning markets?

Strategy Consultant Opportunity (project-based role)

Tyton Partners is the leading strategy consulting and investment banking firm focused exclusively on education and workforce development. We work with the full range of organizations shaping the sector – edtech companies, private equity and venture investors, foundations, nonprofits, and postsecondary institutions – on problems that genuinely matter to how people learn and build careers.

We're expanding our bench of project-based consultants. These are typically 4-to-12-week engagements, 20 to 45 hours per week depending on your availability, staffed as client needs arise. We’re looking for people with strong consulting foundations – the kind built at firms like McKinsey, BCG, Bain, Deloitte, EY-Parthenon, Oliver Wyman, or L.E.K. – who want flexible, rigorous work in a sector where the analysis you do connects directly to real-world outcomes.

WHAT YOU’LL DO

You’ll work as a core contributor alongside Tyton Partners consultants and firm leadership across all phases of client engagements. The problems are varied and complex; the expectation is that you bring both analytical rigor and good judgment to each one. As a project-based consultant, you will:

  • Help clients understand their market. You’ll size industries, map competitive dynamics, and surface growth trends across PreK–12, postsecondary, corporate learning, and workforce markets, giving clients a clearer, more grounded picture of the landscape they're operating in.
  • Build structure around hard questions. Through framework development, you’ll create the conceptual scaffolding that turns a fuzzy strategic question into something a client can actually act on.
  • Build narratives that matter. Through qualitative interviews and original survey research, you’ll surface the stakeholder perspectives and unmet needs that shape real, valuable, and impactful client decisions.
  • Turn analysis into recommendations. You’ll synthesize research, sector data, and financial modeling into clear, prioritized insights that hold up to scrutiny and move senior audiences.
  • Inform investment decisions. On diligence engagements, your analysis will directly shape how sophisticated investors evaluate education sector opportunities.

WHAT WE’RE LOOKING FOR

The baseline requirement is 2+ years of strategy consulting experience at a top-tier firm. Beyond that, we’re looking for:

  • Strong analytical and quantitative skills, with comfort building models and synthesizing data from multiple sources
  • The ability to structure and communicate complex ideas clearly in writing, in slide decks, and in rooms with senior stakeholders
  • A self-directed work style with the discipline to produce client-ready output with limited supervision
  • Collaborative instincts (i.e., you’re equally comfortable receiving direction from partners and coaching junior team members)
  • Genuine interest in education, workforce, or social impact; direct sector experience is a plus but not a requirement

TECHNICAL PREFERENCES

  • Proficiency building client-ready PowerPoint presentations strongly preferred; ThinkCell experience is a plus
  • Proficiency using Excel for market sizing and financial modeling strongly preferred
  • Experience designing and analyzing surveys preferred; Qualtrics familiarity is a plus
  • Exposure to M&A diligence or commercial due diligence work is a plus

What you need to know about the Boston Tech Scene

Boston is a powerhouse for technology innovation thanks to world-class research universities like MIT and Harvard and a robust pipeline of venture capital investment. Host to the first telephone call and one of the first general-purpose computers ever put into use, Boston is now a hub for biotechnology, robotics and artificial intelligence — though it’s also home to several B2B software giants. So it’s no surprise that the city consistently ranks among the greatest startup ecosystems in the world.

Key Facts About Boston Tech

  • Number of Tech Workers: 269,000; 9.4% of overall workforce (2024 CompTIA survey)
  • Major Tech Employers: Thermo Fisher Scientific, Toast, Klaviyo, HubSpot, DraftKings
  • Key Industries: Artificial intelligence, biotechnology, robotics, software, aerospace
  • Funding Landscape: $15.7 billion in venture capital funding in 2024 (Pitchbook)
  • Notable Investors: Summit Partners, Volition Capital, Bain Capital Ventures, MassVentures, Highland Capital Partners
  • Research Centers and Universities: MIT, Harvard University, Boston College, Tufts University, Boston University, Northeastern University, Smithsonian Astrophysical Observatory, National Bureau of Economic Research, Broad Institute, Lowell Center for Space Science & Technology, National Emerging Infectious Diseases Laboratories
