About Foresite Labs

Foresite Labs is a translational R&D team that derives insights from precision measurement and population-scale biology and genetics to address unmet clinical needs. We use human genetics to systematically dissect and understand human disease biology and develop and critically evaluate therapeutic hypotheses. We engage in translational research, transforming basic insights into therapeutic opportunities. Our work supports drug discovery and company formation, and provides the core around which new ideas are realized and incubated. We offer competitive salaries, excellent benefits, a flexible work environment, and the opportunity to learn from top thinkers in various disciplines. Foresite Labs is headquartered in San Francisco and Boston.

Role

We are seeking a Staff/Senior Staff AI Scientist with experience developing and implementing machine learning approaches for complex scientific data. The ideal candidate will have a strong foundation in both a scientific discipline and the foundations of AI methods, with demonstrated expertise in handling multi-modal data types. We offer a flexible work environment, a diverse set of projects, and a best-in-class peer group to learn from, including peers with experience at Google, Meta, and other top-tier tech and biotech companies. This is a great opportunity to tackle a unique set of problems while shaping the future of healthcare.

Responsibilities

  • Lead the development of novel machine learning architectures and algorithms to analyze and integrate diverse scientific data types
  • Design and implement scalable deep learning models that can effectively process complex scientific data to derive actionable insights
  • Drive research initiatives focused on prediction, understanding, and design for AI systems
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams including scientists, management, and investors, and software engineers to translate research findings into practical applications
  • Mentor junior scientists and contribute to the strategic direction of the AI/ML team

Qualifications

  • Ph.D. in Computer Science, Statistics, Computational Biology, or a related field with a focus on machine learning applications
  • Strong theoretical foundation in classical machine learning methods including dimensionality reduction, clustering, and probabilistic modeling
  • Deep understanding of statistical concepts including experimental design, hypothesis testing, and Bayesian inference
  • Minimum 5 years of post-PhD experience developing machine learning models, including at least 3 years of experience in industry
  • Strong publication record demonstrating expertise in deep learning applications for scientific data in biology, healthcare, or the physical sciences (e.g., with genomic, transcriptomic, EHR, or other high dimensional data types)
  • Extensive experience with modern deep learning frameworks (PyTorch, TensorFlow) and high-performance computing environments
  • Strong programming skills in Python and R, with experience in developing production-ready ML pipelines
  • Industrial software engineering skills and discipline, including rigorous testing practices and distributed tools for model training and fine tuning
  • Excellent communication skills and ability to explain complex technical concepts to diverse audiences
  • Track record of successful collaboration with cross-functional teams in a fast-paced environment
  • Experience managing teams of AI scientists to deliver innovative machine learning models and methods

Salary Range: $250,000 - $400,000

What you need to know about the Boston Tech Scene

Boston is a powerhouse for technology innovation thanks to world-class research universities like MIT and Harvard and a robust pipeline of venture capital investment. Host to the first telephone call and one of the first general-purpose computers ever put into use, Boston is now a hub for biotechnology, robotics and artificial intelligence — though it’s also home to several B2B software giants. So it’s no surprise that the city consistently ranks among the greatest startup ecosystems in the world.

Key Facts About Boston Tech

  • Number of Tech Workers: 269,000; 9.4% of overall workforce (2024 CompTIA survey)
  • Major Tech Employers: Thermo Fisher Scientific, Toast, Klaviyo, HubSpot, DraftKings
  • Key Industries: Artificial intelligence, biotechnology, robotics, software, aerospace
  • Funding Landscape: $15.7 billion in venture capital funding in 2024 (Pitchbook)
  • Notable Investors: Summit Partners, Volition Capital, Bain Capital Ventures, MassVentures, Highland Capital Partners
  • Research Centers and Universities: MIT, Harvard University, Boston College, Tufts University, Boston University, Northeastern University, Smithsonian Astrophysical Observatory, National Bureau of Economic Research, Broad Institute, Lowell Center for Space Science & Technology, National Emerging Infectious Diseases Laboratories
