At Fern, we believe people deserve to own their money and transact with it freely. We’re building a set of first-of-their-kind products, powered by crypto, to enable that future. Our first product, Fern for Business, is an onchain bank account that has seen tens of millions in transaction volume and exponentially growing revenue. We’ve gotten this far with a tiny team! We’re excited to scale our team as we enter the next phases of company growth.

We’re looking for an exceptional staff/senior backend engineer to build Fern for Business and our upcoming developer and personal products. You’ll architect, build, and secure complex financial orchestration systems responsible for moving billions in transaction volume, and ship product features that make these workflows accessible to millions of end users. If you’re looking for a high-impact role with significant ownership across backend systems and products, and you’re a tenacious builder who loves working with a team to get shit done, we’d love to meet you.

Non-negotiables:

  • Prior experience working as a staff/senior backend engineer at a web3 or web2 fintech startup

  • You lead by example with get-shit-done mentality, and do what it takes to make it happen

  • Great at working with high-powered teams and filling the gaps to get projects across the finish line

  • Highly self-motivated and autonomous

  • Believer in web3 and crypto’s ability to positively revolutionize finance

  • Able to work US time zones

Nice-to-haves:

  • Computer science degree(s)

  • Based in NYC

What we offer:

  • The chance to change the way the financial world works for everyone

  • Competitive compensation (salary+significant equity) and top-notch benefits

  • An amazing team of humble, motivated, thoughtful folks

  • Bangin’ NYC office culture, but we’re also remote-friendly

What you need to know about the Boston Tech Scene

Boston is a powerhouse for technology innovation thanks to world-class research universities like MIT and Harvard and a robust pipeline of venture capital investment. Host to the first telephone call and one of the first general-purpose computers ever put into use, Boston is now a hub for biotechnology, robotics and artificial intelligence — though it’s also home to several B2B software giants. So it’s no surprise that the city consistently ranks among the greatest startup ecosystems in the world.

Key Facts About Boston Tech

  • Number of Tech Workers: 269,000; 9.4% of overall workforce (2024 CompTIA survey)
  • Major Tech Employers: Thermo Fisher Scientific, Toast, Klaviyo, HubSpot, DraftKings
  • Key Industries: Artificial intelligence, biotechnology, robotics, software, aerospace
  • Funding Landscape: $15.7 billion in venture capital funding in 2024 (Pitchbook)
  • Notable Investors: Summit Partners, Volition Capital, Bain Capital Ventures, MassVentures, Highland Capital Partners
  • Research Centers and Universities: MIT, Harvard University, Boston College, Tufts University, Boston University, Northeastern University, Smithsonian Astrophysical Observatory, National Bureau of Economic Research, Broad Institute, Lowell Center for Space Science & Technology, National Emerging Infectious Diseases Laboratories
