Illumina is looking for a visionary Staff Visual Designer to lead the visual design direction and strategy for next generation genomic solutions that will advance human health and create a world without fear of diseases. You will have the opportunity to blend business strategy and creative design to drive the future state of our product’s form and behavior in collaboration with the leadership team, design leads, and product teams. You will oversee the creative execution and own the creation of visually compelling UI screens, graphics, illustrations, design documentation and presentations to meet business needs and delight the end users. You will report into the Director of User Experience Design, part of Illumina’s User Experience Design team.

The User Experience Design team is part of a larger Experience Design department, inclusive of User Experience Research, Industrial Design, Human Factors & Ergonomics, and User Experience teams. The department is part of Illumina’s Research and Development organization, which is the area responsible for all scientific research and product development across Illumina.

All About You Responsibilities:

  • Craft visually compelling and highly functional user interfaces across desktop, web, and mobile platforms
  • Define and drive the visual strategy and creative direction across all illumina applications, ensuring high-quality execution of UI aesthetics, layout, hierarchy, typography, icon design, color, and brand expression
  • Evolve and govern the visual design language and components within the illumina design system in order to maintain visual cohesiveness and excellence across all illumina platforms
  • Partner with UX, product managers, engineers, and brand stakeholders to align visual design with product requirements and business objectives
  • Create beautiful visuals and design briefs to convey design solutions to leadership and product teams.
  • Translate abstract ideas into compelling visual concepts; provide hands-on support with high-fidelity mockups, UI specs, and design presentations when needed
  • Stay informed of design trends, tools, and best practices, bringing fresh ideas to keep the product visually competitive and engaging
  • Demonstrate and promote the importance of good design and brand values.
  • Successfully advocate for appropriate design solutions across disciplines and stakeholders.
  • Champion user needs and accessibility while delivering visual experiences that are both intuitive and inspiring

Required skills & qualifications

  • 8+ years of experience designing enterprise-grade user interfaces for desktop, web, and mobile applications
  • Deep expertise in visual hierarchy, color theory, typography, iconography, grid systems, and interaction patterns
  • Solid understanding of how to establish scale and contrast, balance and visual hierarchy across a design
  • Ability to define and communicate a cohesive forward-thinking visual strategy and UX vision aligned with business objectives
  • Experience building and scaling visual design systems across large application ecosystems
  • Exceptional collaboration and communication skills
  • A proven track record of working well with multi-disciplinary/multi-cultural teams, and an ability to embrace collaboration with all team members, including product, project, and development team members as well as UX colleagues
  • Ability to influence cross-functional stakeholders and executive audiences
  • Excellent knowledge of all aspects of user centered design process, methodology, and UI design best practices
  • Proficient in industry-standard design and prototyping tools (e.g., Figma, Sketch, Adobe Creative Suite)
  • Experience designing for accessibility and familiarity with Setion 508 and WCAG standards

Preferred skills & qualifications:

  • Master’s degree in Visual Design, Arts in Multimedia, Graphic Design, or equivalent degree or professional experience
  • Experience working at a design consultancy or agency is preferred
  • Background working for Medical devices, Life Science, or Healthcare Industries is a plus.
