Staff Systems Engineer
Join a fast‑moving, entrepreneurial team building a first‑of‑its‑kind novel fluid‑analysis sensing product. As a Systems Engineer, you will help to define the system architecture, integrate mechanical, electrical, sensing, and software components, and bring prototypes and the final product to life.
You will work across disciplines to ensure the system functions cohesively end‑to‑end. This includes requirements definition, architecture creation, subsystem integration, prototyping, testing, and supporting design decisions throughout development. This role is ideal for an engineer who enjoys working at the intersection of hardware and software, thrives in fast‑paced environments, and loves building real systems that solve real problems.
What you'll do:
- Define system‑level requirements and architecture for a novel fluid‑analysis sensing product
- Integrate mechanical, electrical, sensor, and software subsystems into a cohesive system design
- Develop and test functional prototypes, iterating rapidly to validate concepts and inform design choices
- Identify and resolve system‑level issues across hardware, sensing, and embedded software interfaces
- Support the development of manufacturable architecture for the final product
- Collaborate closely with scientists and engineers to translate research concepts into practical, deployable solutions
- Work with external partners and vendors contributing components or subsystems
- Contribute to system documentation, test plans, and design reviews throughout the development lifecycle
We're looking for someone with:
- 5-10 years of experience in systems engineering, system architecture, or multidisciplinary product development
- BS or MS in Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Software Engineering, or a related field
- Experience architecting systems that combine hardware, software, and sensing elements
- Hands‑on experience building and testing prototypes
- Strong understanding of system‑level interfaces (electrical, mechanical, software, sensing)
- Ability to decompose complex problems into clear requirements and structured architectures
- Comfort working in fast‑paced, ambiguous environments and making iterative design decisions
- Strong collaboration skills and the ability to work effectively with cross‑disciplinary teams
- Clear communication skills for documenting and presenting architecture and system‑level decisions
Nice to have:
- Experience with sensor integration or measurement systems
- Experience with embedded software or firmware development
- Exposure to fluid systems, microfluidics, or analytical instrumentation
- Experience working in early‑stage product development or startup‑like environments
Location: Wilmington, MA (hybrid work model)
Travel: Limited travel to partner sites and customer facilities as needed
