Lob was founded in 2013 by technical co-founders with a vision to connect the world one mailbox at a time. Today, we're transforming the way businesses use direct mail and bringing the power of technology to a traditionally manual channel.
Our modern logistics and fulfillment engine helps businesses to build and scale high-quality, personalized direct mail programs without the operational burden. As we grow to meet the evolving needs of our customers and expand our product offerings, we’re building a team to shape the future of direct mail.
About The Role
As a Staff Software Engineer at Lob, you’ll have technical ownership and expertise of your team’s domain as well as broad knowledge of Lob’s software systems. You’ll work on code, but you’ll also have a key role in reviewing others’ code, creating new feature designs, collaborating with other engineering teams to understand system impacts of new work, educating more junior engineers on software best practices, and mentoring their technical skills.
As a Staff Engineer, you’ll...
- Write high quality code and tests, with well-thought out support, deployment, monitoring, logging, and alerting functions in place.
- Take ownership of system health, identifying ways to improve stability and proactively resolving defects before they become problems.
- Delegate to teammates to both lighten your workload and spread the experience and knowledge.
- Write documentation for other developers to learn from.
- Write documentation for business and product users to learn from, and in turn educate customers with.
- Partner with product and engineering managers to plan your team’s work, short term and long term.
- Work with third parties such as technical representatives from vendors.
- Consult with engineering leadership and fellow staff engineers to establish company-wide engineering goals and initiatives.
What you will bring to this role...
- 8+ years of experience as a high-performing software engineer in a role of technical leadership.
- 3+ years experience with cloud-based SaaS systems and service providers, such as AWS, Temporal, Nomad, Datadog, or similar.
- Strong programming and problem solving skills. We mostly use Node.js TypeScript but have successfully onboarded engineers with primary experience in languages like Java, Go, C++, etc.
- Strong communications skills. Ability to write good software documentation, draw system architecture diagrams, explain technical problems to management and engineering leadership, etc.
- A talent and desire to educate teams on software best practices and the specific details of development tasks.
- Good software estimating and planning skills. Know how to fill a sprint plan from a backlog, split work into smaller tasks when necessary, prioritize the backlog.
Since great engineers come from a variety of backgrounds, it doesn’t particularly matter if you have a specific degree—we want to hear about your contributions in a real-world setting.
