As a Staff Software Engineer at Redox, you are a technical leader responsible for the health, scalability, and evolution of our interoperability engine. In our highly collaborative environment, your role is a strategic partner guiding Product Management rather than simply offering input. You will navigate the complexity of full-stack user experience and complex healthcare data formats, ensuring our platform remains the gold standard for real-time healthcare data exchange. Furthermore, you will be responsible for providing users with insight into the processing of this data and tools for effective troubleshooting.
This is a role for an engineer who thrives at the intersection of deep technical problem-solving and product strategy. You will identify critical technical levers to improve customer outcomes, driving projects that balance immediate delivery with long-term systemic stability. You’ll be a force multiplier, elevating the engineers around you through intentional mentorship and modeling a culture where psychological safety, technical excellence, high ownership of outcomes, and autonomy coexist.
Our Engineering Culture & How We Work
- The Product + Engineering Interface: We believe product success hinges on early alignment between Engineering and Product. Our teams collaborate closely during Discovery and Refinement to define scope, evaluate technical feasibility, and shape long-term roadmaps together.
- Psychological Safety & Learning: We normalize being “in progress.” We value curiosity, encourage questions, and treat mistakes as shared learning opportunities. Blameless post-mortems are a core part of how we grow, both as individuals and as a team.
- Radical Transparency: We communicate openly and intentionally. We default to public Slack channels, document and share meeting notes, and prioritize asynchronous communication. We embrace the vulnerability of sharing work-in-progress to enable better, more inclusive decision-making.
- Engineering-Driven Ownership: We believe in strong technical stewardship. Engineering plays an active role in shaping solutions, contributing to project direction, and advocating for long-term system health and sustainability.
Job Responsibilities
- Technical Ownership & Partnership: Take technical ownership of a product space. Deliver high-impact products to market in close collaboration with Product Managers and fellow engineers.
- Architectural Leadership: Lead the design and implementation of full-stack and backend solutions. Create architectural design documents and proofs of concept to modernize the platform and reduce maintenance overhead.
- Cross-Functional Influence: Collaborate across teams to define solutions and provide clear direction on technical tradeoffs, ensuring alignment with both product goals and engineering standards.
- Domain SME: Become a subject matter expert in your team’s services. Champion engineer-led projects to improve stability, performance, and the developer experience.
- Mentorship & Learning Mindset: Foster a culture of collective excellence where learning happens in all directions. You will facilitate peer-to-peer knowledge sharing across the engineering organization, rooted in the belief that everyone has something to teach and something to learn. Whether exploring new industry standards or deep-diving into domain logic, you create the space for engineers at all levels to grow together through shared technical curiosity.
Required Skills & Experience
- Experience: 8+ years of professional software development experience, with a track record of leading medium-to-large projects involving multiple engineers.
- Full-Stack Expertise: Demonstrated ability to drive projects across the full stack (backend services, data persistence, and modern frontend frameworks like React/TypeScript). Comfortable with translating designs and wireframes into high-quality code.
- Cloud & Infrastructure: Proficiency in cloud-native environments (AWS preferred), and relational databases (Postgres).
- Communication: Strong organizational and communication skills, including experience with pair programming and translating complex technical concepts for product stakeholders.
- Values Alignment: A commitment to continuous learning, perseverance in solving complex problems, strong ownership of outcomes, and excellent collaboration skills, all within an inclusive engineering culture rooted in psychological safety.
Preferred Skills & Experience
- Healthcare Domain: Experience working with healthcare data standards such as FHIR, HL7v2, or X12, or building integrations with EHR systems.
- Technical Breadth: We value engineers who can move across the stack and adapt quickly. Experience with many of the following (or similar technologies) is helpful:
Backend: Node.js / TypeScript, REST API design
Frontend: React or modern UI frameworks
Data & Infrastructure: Postgres, Redis, AWS
Observability: tools like Grafana, Sumo Logic, or comparable platforms
DevOps: CI/CD pipelines (e.g., GitHub Actions, Jenkins, ArgoCD), Infrastructure as Code (e.g., Terraform)
- AI-Augmented Engineering: Experience using AI-assisted development tools (such as GitHub Copilot or Claude) to improve productivity, code quality, and iteration speed.
- Remote Collaboration: Comfort working in a fully remote environment with a balance of asynchronous and synchronous collaboration. This includes clear written communication, transparent progress-sharing, and effective participation in real-time pairing or team discussions.
Technical Toolkit
- Core Technologies: Node.js / TypeScript, React, AWS, Postgres, REST API design
- Additional Technologies We Use: Redis, Terraform, CI/CD tools (GitHub Actions, Jenkins, ArgoCD), observability platforms (e.g., Grafana)
