Squarespace is looking for a Backend Staff Software Engineer for the Online Stores organization to partner with our product and engineering teams.

Our Online Stores Engineering team enables our merchants to create and grow standout ecommerce brands and businesses. We develop the services, products, and frameworks essential for delivering the best selling experience to all Squarespace customers inclusive of donations platforms, digital products sellers, physical goods sellers, and service products sellers.

In this role, you will lead technical strategy, architecture, and implementation while mentoring engineers, collaborating across teams, and contributing code to complex projects that align technical investments with business priorities.

This is a hybrid role working from our NYC office 3 days per week. You will report to the Senior Software Engineering Manager based in NYC.

You'll Get To…
  • Be the architect for a major area of our business. Hands-on detangling large-scale and deep problems, while simultaneously influencing architecture ongoing features and investments.
  • Influence: Drive best practices for engineering excellence and technical leadership, influence design reviews, question assumptions, point out pitfalls and foster shared understanding
  • Guide: Provide guidance to the engineering team to help architect solutions at scale and become the goto whiteboard partner for the team.
  • Mentor: Multiply your effectiveness through influence by growing our experienced team of Software Engineers of several levels.
  • Plan: Tie technical investments to business priorities, lead architecture discussions and design reviews, and contribute to product roadmap planning
  • Collaborate: Work with engineering teams across the company
  • Write: Create medium to long term technical strategies for our online store product and platform. Clearly and concisely write that strategy and collaborate with engineers across the organization to implement the strategy
  • Code: Wants to contribute directly to projects that require more senior technical expertise or to quickly address ambiguous engineering challenges across the organization
Who We're Looking For
  • Have 8+ years of experience developing web-based production systems with at least 8+ years of building large-scale software and distributed systems
  • Strong understanding of, and experience with, web application development
  • Have experience building and implementing long-term technical strategy
  • Want to expand your technical influence and effect across teams while still being a hands-on individual contributor
  • Ability to create effective designs to solve complex problems and lead teams to implement them
  • Enjoy exploring the intersection between product and engineering
  • Keep a user-first perspective while building your products
  • Significant experience using multiple programming languages (especially Java)  and a broad range of tools
  • Effective communication skills with ability to give impactful feedback to colleagues
  • Hands-on approach and pragmatic attitude in turning ideas into working software

Cash Compensation Range: $185,500 - $260,000 USD

The base salary for this position will vary based on job-related criteria including relevant skills, experience, and location, among other factors.

In addition to the cash compensation above (which includes base salary and, where applicable for eligible roles, may include overtime pay), Squarespace employees are eligible to be granted an option to purchase our common stock. Sales positions generally offer a competitive On Target Earnings (OTE) incentive structure in addition to base salary.
