While many roles at Coinbase are remote-first, we are not remote-only. In-person participation is required throughout the year. Team and company-wide offsites are held multiple times annually to foster collaboration, connection, and alignment. Attendance is expected and fully supported.
You'll be joining the Coinbase Institutional team. Our engineers create and maintain a suite of products catering to institutional customers of all sizes from Hedge Funds (Coinbase Prime) to experienced individual traders (Coinbase Advanced Trade) and everything in between. Additional Institutional Products include Custody, Commerce, and Exchange. Whether the customer needs are trading, financing, staking, governance, custody or API integrations, Coinbase Institutional has them covered.
As a Staff Software Engineer on the Institutional, Settlements and Transfers team, you will be at the core of Coinbase's financial infrastructure, ensuring the seamless and secure movement of funds. This team is responsible for processing transactions across fiat, crypto, and internal ledgers, and managing assets for our clients. You will lead the technical direction and mentorship for a team of engineers, playing a critical role in building and scaling the next generation of our financial systems.
What you'll be doing (ie. job duties):

• Architect and develop services and frameworks that power Coinbase Prime's settlement and transfer processes.
• Provide technical oversight and guidance, working closely with management and stakeholders to define and execute on the strategic roadmap.
• Lead individual projects, managing priorities, deadlines, and deliverables with your technical expertise.
• Mentor and train other engineers on design techniques and coding standards, fostering a culture of technical excellence.
• Write high-quality, well-tested code for fault-tolerant and highly reliable systems at scale.
• Collaborate with cross-functional teams, including product managers and designers, to transform technical vision into a tangible roadmap.

What we look for in you:

• 8+ years of experience in software engineering.
• Proven experience in building fault-tolerant, highly reliable systems at scale.
• Demonstrated experience in architecting and developing solutions to ambiguous problems with significant impact.
• Experience applying these skills to Ledgering, Trading, or Payment systems at scale.
• A passion for building an open financial system that brings the world together.
• Excellent collaboration and communication skills, with the ability to influence and drive change at all levels.

Nice to haves:

• Experience with Golang and Ruby.
• Familiarity with on-chain activity, such as interacting with Ethereum addresses and dApps.
• Experience with financial systems, banking, or fintech.
• Knowledge of concepts like T+1 or T+2 settlement cycles, and the roles of clearing houses and settlement agents.
• You have gone through a rapid growth in your company (from 10 to 100s of engineers)

Pay Range:
$211,650 - $249,000 USD
