The Role

On a high level, the core objective for the team is building out a new component library that specifically fits the needs of Square's Dashboard. We've got a solid existing component library, but need to grow it to meet the expanding needs of our developers. This is a transformational time to join our team as a Staff Software Engineer, especially if you're excited about shaping how the 200+ web engineers build tools to support our small business customers

You Will
- Be a key player in Square's Market design system - our React component library that powers experiences used by millions of Square sellers
- Help architect and build out a second-level component library based on Market, giving our product teams the building blocks they need to move fast while staying consistent
- Work closely with the UI Systems team across Square and Block to ensure our components are not just beautiful, but accessible to everyone - we take a11y seriously around here
- Share ownership in Square's Dashboard web application - a surface used by millions of Square sellers to manage their businesses - ensuring we are proud to sign our names to the experiences we enable there
- Work with other senior front-end engineers to establish and evangelize best practices and patterns with React
- Explore and implement emerging technologies, including AI-assisted development tools, to enhance our component development workflow
- Prioritize and advocate for tooling and build investments that will add leverage for every front-end engineer
- Actively participate in reviewing engineering design documents to advocate for the right technical architectural tradeoffs
- Coach and mentor engineers across the organization, evolving and instilling a culture of high quality and high velocity work
You Have
- 12+ years of experience with JavaScript/TypeScript and modern web frameworks
- Deep, hands-on experience with React - the kind of knowledge that comes from building and maintaining large-scale React applications
- Significant experience working with component libraries and design systems - bonus points if you've helped build one from the ground up
- A strong commitment to web accessibility (A11y) and experience implementing WCAG guidelines in real-world applications
- Extensive experience in web markup (HTML5, CSS3), backend technologies (NodeJS, Java), front-end build tools (Webpack, ESbuild, Vite) as well as micro front-end architecture
- Proven record of successfully delivering large projects (> 1 year) and large teams from start to finish with strong collaboration, communication, and ownership
- Hands on experience setting up and maintaining ReactJS applications with a substantial contributor base (dozens of active weekly contributors)
- A track record of active contributions to front-end open source projects
- Curiosity about emerging technologies and their practical applications in developer tooling
