Johnson & Johnson announced plans to separate our Orthopaedics business to establish a standalone Orthopedics company, operating as DePuy Synthes. The process of the planned separation is anticipated to be completed within 18 to 24 months, subject to legal requirements, including consultation with works councils and other employee representative bodies, as may be required, regulatory approvals and other customary conditions and approvals.

The Staff Electrical Engineer will be a key member of the Robotics Hardware organization, making vital contributions to the existing VELYS Robotic Hardware platform, the New Product Development (NPD) pipeline, and the transformation of patient care through innovation. They will provide advanced electrical engineering expertise, drive crossfunctional problem solving, and support the development, verification, and validation of complex electromechanical systems in a fastpaced robotics environment.
Responsibilities:
Lead the electrical design, integration, and verification of complex electromechanical subsystems for robotic medical devices throughout the product lifecycle.
Drive cross‑functional technical problem solving, collaborating closely with Mechanical, Systems, Software/Firmware, and Manufacturing Engineering teams to ensure robust system performance.
Lead the product through IEC 60601 compliance activities—including EMC, electrical safety, risk management, and essential performance—by coordinating internal teams, external test labs, and design updates required to achieve certification.
Lead root cause investigations on electrical and software related issues that arise during the prototype and production processes.
Work with external and internal manufacturers to implement testing of capital equipment
Provides leadership for new product development teams and participates in discovery, concept and feasibility research.
Approves design specifications, drawings, and protocols as defined in the signature matrix.
Partners with affiliated disciplines such as regulatory affairs and clinical affairs to assure adequate compliance design inputs are included.
Work with external and internal manufacturers to implement testing of capital equipment
Support Design Verification and Validation (DV/VV) builds, analyze test results, and drive corrective actions to ensure reliability, safety, and manufacturability.
Champion continuous improvement initiatives in hardware architecture, design practices, and test methodologies
Primary point of contact with the manufacturing partner for manufacturing related activities, including suppliers, device builds, component development, process and assembly development, PFMEAs, collaboration meetings, etc.
Apply prior work experience, Design for Manufacturing & Assembly (DFMA) techniques, Lean Six Sigma process knowledge, and risk analysis tools to drive the product design to its most efficient and manufacturable outcome.
Provide day-to-day direction and prioritization of development team tasks.
Utilize advanced lab test equipment—including oscilloscopes, logic analyzers, power analyzers, signal generators, and EMI pre‑compliance tools—to debug, characterize, and validate electrical and electromechanical systems.
Education & Required Skills/Experiences:
A minimum of a Bachelor’s Degree in Electrical Engineering is required.
7+ years of relevant work experience
Regulated industry experience required. Medical device industry experience highly preferred
Proficiency utilizing the MS Office 365 tools (Project, Excel, PowerPoint, Visio, Word, Outlook, SharePoint)
Ability to work independently, prioritize tasks and handle a varied workload
Solid ability to balance changes in scope, resources, and timing on projects while handling risks and maintaining determined focus on customer satisfaction
Demonstrated strong leadership , technical skill and collaboration qualities
Experience with analog and digital circuitry design and development.
Detailed understanding of board-level printed circuit design and signal integrity issues.
Experience with electro-mechanical systems.
Experience with Design for Manufacturing and Assembly (DFMA) and Failure Mode Effects Analysis (FMEA).
Experience designing PCBAs (Schematics, Analysis, Layout, Manufacturing)
Preferred Skills & Experience:
Experience leading cross‑functional hardware teams in the development of capital medical robotics or surgical navigation systems.
Experience with Robotics highly preferred
Hands‑on expertise with motor control, high‑power electronics, motion systems, or real‑time sensing for robotic platforms.
Proficiency with industry‑standard ECAD/MCAD collaboration tools and advanced simulation techniques (e.g., Altium, SPICE, Multisim).
Demonstrated success working with external design partners and contract manufacturers to scale complex electromechanical products into production.
Experience with global medical device standards IEC 60601 (e.g., ISO 14971, ISO 13485) and experience supporting regulatory submissions.

This is a hybrid position located in Boston, MA and requires up to 25% (Domestic/International) travel.
