Engineering Manager - Embedded Firmware

Alarm.com is seeking an Engineering Manager to lead an embedded software team focused on MCU firmware for the security gateways and sensors at the heart of millions of connected properties. This is firmware where reliability truly matters: bare-metal and RTOS systems that run for years on a battery, communicate over cellular and short-range radios, and protect people and property every day. It's a player-coach role — you'll set the direction for the team and grow its engineers while staying deep in the technology: reviewing designs and code, and helping crack the hardest problems. Device Engineering spans many offices, and this role works across all of them — keeping your team, peer teams, and stakeholders in alignment.

Responsibilities:

  • Lead an embedded software team building MCU-based (bare-metal / RTOS) security gateways and sensors, owning both day-to-day execution and the team's long-term growth
  • Own the team's delivery: sprint commitments, project plans, and resource allocation across concurrent projects
  • Stay hands-on: lead design and architecture reviews, review code, and help the team work through its hardest technical problems
  • Partner with hardware, product management, quality, and operations teams to take products from concept through mass production
  • Oversee manufacturing test software and production integration with contract manufacturers (CMs)
  • Coach and develop team members through effective 1:1s and clear feedback; hire as the team grows
  • Manage across the many offices Device Engineering participates in — communicating plans, status, and risks proactively and keeping distributed teams and senior management in alignment
  • Other duties as assigned

Required Technical Skills:

  • B.S. or M.S. in Electrical, Computer, or Software Engineering, or equivalent demonstrable experience
  • 2+ years managing or leading an engineering team; 5+ years developing embedded firmware
  • Deep microcontroller experience: C, bare-metal and RTOS environments, and hardware-level debugging (JTAG/SWD, logic analyzers, oscilloscopes)
  • Experience with low-power, battery-operated devices and wireless connectivity (cellular LTE Cat-M / NB-IoT and short-range radios)
  • Sound technical judgment: knows when to move fast and when to build for robustness, and can thoroughly vet the team's designs and implementations
  • Strong communicator who operates well in a distributed organization and keeps remote stakeholders aligned

Nice to Haves:

  • Manufacturing test software, production automation, and contract manufacturer coordination
  • Designing to UL, EN, and NFA2P life-safety requirements
  • Home automation protocols (Z-Wave, Zigbee), USB, Ethernet, sensors, and power management
  • M.S. in Engineering Management or similar

Please note that sponsorship of new applicants for employment authorization, or any other immigration-related support, is not available for this position at this time.
