About the Opportunity

Job Description:

The Khoury College of Computer Sciences at Northeastern University is seeking a scientific software developer to join a research team led by Dr. Benjamin Gyori, working on computational approaches to accelerate discovery in biomedicine. The team consists of researchers and scientific software developers from different backgrounds including computing, life sciences and other natural sciences.

Responsibilities:

As a member of this team, the applicant will be responsible for developing and testing software encompassing natural language processing, knowledge integration, model generation and model analysis. Responsibilities also include deploying software on cloud computing infrastructure, and creating web services and associated user interfaces. Areas of focus for the applicant include contributing to a project as part of the DARPA Automating Scientific Knowledge Extraction and Modeling (ASKEM) program (https://www.darpa.mil/program/automating-scientific-knowledge-extraction-and-modeling) whose objective is to develop AI approaches and tools to create, sustain, and enhance scientific models of complex systems applied to biomedicine, epidemiology and climate science, as well as the ARPA-H BDF program (https://arpa-h.gov/research-and-funding/programs/arpa-h-bdf-toolbox) which aims to develop new technologies for biomedical data integration.

The ideal candidate should be broadly conversant with programming in Python, preferably in the context of scientific data analysis. The candidate should also be familiar with rapid prototyping and collaborative software development. Experience with machine learning applied to scientific data, and with natural language processing is a plus.

Minimum Qualifications:

Qualified candidates should have:

  • Master’s or doctoral degree in computer science, computational biology, bioinformatics or related fields

  • 2+ years of experience in Python programming with well documented track-record, for instance, through a public GitHub profile

  • Experience with Git version control

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills

  • Strong interpersonal and organizational skills

  • Experience in the following is a plus, but not strictly required

  • Proficiency in programming for scientific data analysis

  • Experience with natural language processing systems

  • Experience with machine learning methods and software libraries

  • Experience with Python scientific computing libraries (numpy, scipy, pandas, networkx)

  • Experience with JavaScript and front-end development
