About the Role:

We’re looking for a Sr. Manager of Data Engineering to lead and scale our Data and ML Infrastructure teams at Hims & Hers. This role goes beyond day-to-day squad management—it's about building technical strategy, developing engineering leaders, and driving long-term data platform evolution in close partnership with Product, Analytics, and Infrastructure leadership.

As a Senior Manager, you will lead multiple squads or a domain area responsible for powering business-critical data pipelines, enabling ML workflows, and scaling our analytics infrastructure. You’ll set the technical vision, foster engineering excellence, and empower senior ICs and managers to deliver durable systems that balance speed, quality, and cost.

You will also play a key role in recruiting and retaining exceptional talent, coaching senior engineers and EMs, and influencing cross-functional strategic decisions that shape the direction of the company.

You Will:
  • Lead and scale a team responsible for large-scale data and ML infrastructure, supporting both real-time and batch processing systems

  • Define and drive technical strategy across multiple squads, ensuring systems are reliable, scalable, and aligned with long-term business goals

  • Guide the implementation of best-in-class engineering practices, including robust testing, SLAs, monitoring, and data quality enforcement

  • Set a high bar for technical excellence, promoting clean architecture, code quality, and maintainability through code reviews and hands-on mentorship

  • Coach and develop senior individual contributors, fostering an inclusive and high-performing engineering culture

  • Act as a thought partner to cross-functional leaders in Product, Analytics, and Infrastructure, shaping roadmap priorities and delivering measurable business outcomes

  • Continuously evaluate and recommend new tools, frameworks, and methodologies to improve team efficiency and system performance

  • Identify and resolve systemic issues in workflows, proactively recommending and implementing process improvements

  • Actively recruit and retain top talent, manage performance and development, and scale team capacity through smart workforce planning.

  • Demonstrate strong written and verbal communication, listening with empathy and sharing context with clarity across technical and non-technical stakeholders

  • Champion operational excellence, ensuring system reliability and continuous improvement in delivery practices

You Have:
  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science/Engineering or related field

  • 10+ years of experience in backend or data engineering, including deep expertise in data pipelines, distributed systems, and analytics infrastructure

  • 3+ years of engineering leadership experience managing managers or senior technical leads.

  • Strong command of SQL and Python, with practical experience using Databricks, Spark, Kafka, and/or other modern data platforms

  • Proven track record of leading technical strategy, making architectural decisions, and delivering large-scale systems with cross-functional impact

  • Experience hiring and growing senior engineering talent while fostering a high-performance, values-driven team culture

  • Excellent communication and collaboration skills with experience influencing both technical and executive audiences

  • Demonstrated success aligning multiple teams around a shared vision and navigating ambiguity and organizational change

Nice to Have:
  • Experience building ML platforms or enabling ML workflows in production

  • Familiarity with customer data platforms, event instrumentation, or observability practices

  • Prior work scaling infrastructure in a regulated or high-compliance environment (e.g., healthcare, fintech)

  • Background in budget planning, vendor negotiations, or infrastructure cost optimization

Our Benefits (there are more but here are some highlights):
  • Competitive salary & equity compensation for full-time roles

  • Unlimited PTO, company holidays, and quarterly mental health days

  • Comprehensive health benefits including medical, dental & vision, and parental leave

  • Employee Stock Purchase Program (ESPP)

  • 401k benefits with employer matching contribution

  • Offsite team retreats

We are committed to building a workforce that reflects diverse perspectives and prioritizes ethics, wellness, and a strong sense of belonging. If you're excited about this role, we encourage you to apply—even if you're not sure if your background or experience is a perfect match.

What you need to know about the Boston Tech Scene

Boston is a powerhouse for technology innovation thanks to world-class research universities like MIT and Harvard and a robust pipeline of venture capital investment. Host to the first telephone call and one of the first general-purpose computers ever put into use, Boston is now a hub for biotechnology, robotics and artificial intelligence — though it’s also home to several B2B software giants. So it’s no surprise that the city consistently ranks among the greatest startup ecosystems in the world.

Key Facts About Boston Tech

  • Number of Tech Workers: 269,000; 9.4% of overall workforce (2024 CompTIA survey)
  • Major Tech Employers: Thermo Fisher Scientific, Toast, Klaviyo, HubSpot, DraftKings
  • Key Industries: Artificial intelligence, biotechnology, robotics, software, aerospace
  • Funding Landscape: $15.7 billion in venture capital funding in 2024 (Pitchbook)
  • Notable Investors: Summit Partners, Volition Capital, Bain Capital Ventures, MassVentures, Highland Capital Partners
  • Research Centers and Universities: MIT, Harvard University, Boston College, Tufts University, Boston University, Northeastern University, Smithsonian Astrophysical Observatory, National Bureau of Economic Research, Broad Institute, Lowell Center for Space Science & Technology, National Emerging Infectious Diseases Laboratories
