Job Summary

Location: This is a remote role with no in-office requirement. We prefer candidates based in the Salt Lake City area who can come into the office on a somewhat regular basis for key leadership meetings.
As Sr. Manager, AI Search Visibility (AEO/SEO), you will own how Purple is found, recommended, and accurately cited when shoppers ask ChatGPT, Gemini, Google AI Overviews and AI Mode, Perplexity, Copilot, Claude, and AI shopping assistants for a mattress, pillow, or comfort recommendation.
Reporting to the VP of Ecommerce, you'll lead Purple.com's shift from keyword ranking to AI recommendation. You'll make the site and product data easy for AI engines to read, build the off-site authority LLMs rely on, and turn visibility into revenue across our mattresses, GelFlex® Grid pillows, seat cushions, and bedding.
This is a strategy-and-orchestration role. You'll set direction, own the metrics, write technical requirements, and direct agency partners, working closely with IT, Creative, Demand Gen, PR, and Site Merchandising. AEO is a board-level priority at Purple, so your work will be visible at the top of the company.

Job Description

How you’ll shape the future of comfort:

What you'll own

1. AI visibility strategy and measurement

  • Own Purple's AI visibility KPIs: mention share, citation share, share of voice, sentiment, and average position, by engine, topic, and competitor (Saatva, Helix, Tempur-Pedic, Nectar).
  • Own the tracked prompt set. Map the conversational, multi-variable questions shoppers ask (back pain, hot sleepers, side sleepers, "which Purple is right for me") to the pages and sources that should answer them.
  • Maintain a quarterly AEO Opportunity Matrix that scores visibility, competitive gaps, and existing content by category (Mattress, Pillows, Seat Cushions).
  • Monitor how AI engines describe Purple and correct inaccuracies about our products, warranty, and GelFlex® Grid technology at the source.

2. Machine-readable site and product data

  • Own structured data across Purple.com: Product, Offer, Review, FAQ, Organization, and LocalBusiness schema in JSON-LD. Write, validate, and audit it.
  • Govern AI crawler access (GPTBot, OAI-SearchBot, PerplexityBot, Google-Extended, and others) through robots.txt and related controls, balancing visibility with site performance.
  • Own Purple's entity footprint: consistent, accurate brand and product facts across our site, Google's Knowledge Graph, Merchant Center, and major third-party sources.
  • Partner with IT on indexing, rendering, canonicals, faceted navigation, and site speed. Write SEO/AEO requirements for Purple's platform modernization so visibility is protected through any migration.
  • Optimize product feeds (Google Merchant Center, ProductsUp) for AI shopping results and emerging agentic commerce.

3. Off-site authority and citations

  • Run the Citation Gap Program: find where Sleep Foundation, Tom's Guide, NCOA, Mattress Nerd, YouTube reviewers, and other sources cite competitors but not Purple, then close those gaps with PR and affiliate partners.
  • Direct the Reddit strategy, including the AMA series, r/LifeOnPurple moderation, and Reddit's role as a top AI citation source.
  • Partner with PR and Brand on reviews, expert endorsements, and E-E-A-T signals.

4. Content built for answers

  • Set the answer-first content standard for landing pages, PDPs, FAQs, and blog content.
  • Own the content plan and the key approvals: Purple's style guide and legal guardrails, each brief's angle and outline, and every finished piece before it publishes.
  • Build topic clusters where Purple should own the AI answer: pain and pressure relief, cooling, sleep position, and model differentiation.
  • Partner with Legal and SMEs on substantiated, SME-backed health and sleep content.
  • Ensure every new product and landing page launches with schema, FAQs, and internal linking from day one.

5. Organic search foundation and revenue

  • Grow top-3 rankings on high-intent terms, which still drive the clicks and revenue AI answers are absorbing.
  • Own organic revenue and AI-referred revenue and tie visibility work to business results.
  • Align with Site Merchandising and Demand Gen on launches (new product lines, BFCM, seasonal) and landing page governance.
  • Track early AI commerce developments and recommend when Purple should invest.

Secondary responsibilities

  • Local SEO and new store openings. Make sure every new Purple showroom launches search-ready, with its Google Business Profile, store locator listing, and LocalBusiness schema live by opening day, working with current agencies and solution providers.
  • Amazon SEO. Support the Amazon channel team with listing and keyword optimization so Purple product information stays accurate and consistent across Amazon and its AI shopping assistant.

How success is measured

  • You'll be accountable for AI visibility and for the revenue it drives.

What we’re looking for:

  • 5+ years in SEO, with significant Ecommerce or DTC experience. High-ticket consumer goods is a plus.
  • 1 to 2+ years of hands-on AEO/GEO work, with examples of measurably improving a brand's visibility, citations, or share of voice in AI answers.
  • Hands-on experience writing, testing, and auditing nested schema.org markup in JSON-LD for product catalogs.
  • Working knowledge of how AI engines find and use content: crawler access, rendering of JavaScript-heavy pages, retrieval, and the third-party sources LLMs cite.
  • Experience with AI visibility platforms (SEO Clarity ArcAI, Peec, Profound, Ahrefs Brand Radar, or similar) and enterprise rank tracking.
  • Strong analytics skills in GA4 and Google Search Console, with the ability to turn data into clear recommendations for leadership.
  • Experience managing agencies with clear briefs, KPIs, and QA, including AI-assisted content production at scale.
  • Proven ability to influence IT, Creative, PR, and paid media teams without direct authority.
  • Clear, concise communicator who can present to executives and the board.

Even Better if...

  • Reddit and community strategy, or managing a community or social agency.
  • Affiliate, PR, or digital PR experience tied to citation building.
  • Experience with Google Merchant Center, product feed tools, and AI shopping or agentic commerce.
  • SQL, Snowflake, or comfort using LLM APIs and scripts to monitor AI answers at scale.
  • Experience with health or wellness content and claim substantiation.
