Reporting to the Chief Operating Officer, the Senior Director and Chief of Staff, Operations extends the reach of the COO and keeps the division’s most important work moving. This is a senior leadership role that blends strategic counsel, cross-functional coordination, and hands-on execution – shaping where the COO spends time and attention, driving the division’s priority initiatives, and serving as the COO’s trusted proxy with leaders across the enterprise, the Office of the CEO, the Board of Directors and external partners/vendors.

This role is based out of our Boston, MA office or Hingham, MA office and is eligible for the Flex persona, with minimum in-office requirements of Tuesdays and Wednesdays.

Key accountabilities for the role include:

  • Serves as a key right hand to the COO; supporting and managing internal and external issues and directly handling matters of organizational importance on behalf of the COO, as appropriate.
  • Drives the division’s shift from siloed, function-by-function work toward integrated, cross-functional execution, keeping business priorities and enterprise technology pointed in the same direction.
  • Leads priority cross-functional initiatives end-to-end, working across internal teams and external vendors to turn strategy into progress.
  • Advancing integrated advocacy model and the consumer experience strategy across the enterprise.
  • Supports facilitation of the division’s key meetings and governance forums – such as the COO Directs leadership meeting, business review meetings, and others – shaping agendas, preparing materials, and managing the flow of information before and after each meeting.
  • Ensures cross functional value and effectiveness of the enterprise Operating Committee by driving the strategic agenda, curating all meeting content, and managing the end-to-end execution of the meeting series. The role also leads the annual planning and governance process for Operating Committee, ensuring all post-meeting action items are addressed.
  • Drives the development and preparation of all content and materials for the Board of Directors' Health Care Quality and Affordability (HCQA) Committee, in close partnership with the COO.
  • Partners with the COO and senior executives on planning, policy and problem-solving, building collaboration and consensus across leaders and their teams.
  • Represents the COO and BCBSMA with senior leaders, external partners and community stakeholders, and prepares or shapes the correspondence, reports, briefings and presentations that carry the COO’s message.
  • Leads special projects on behalf of the COO, often pulling in senior executives from across the company.

Key Competencies:

So it’s no surprise that the city consistently ranks among the greatest startup ecosystems in the world.

  • Funding Landscape: $15.7 billion in venture capital funding in 2024 (Pitchbook)
  • Notable Investors: Summit Partners, Volition Capital, Bain Capital Ventures, MassVentures, Highland Capital Partners
  • Research Centers and Universities: MIT, Harvard University, Boston College, Tufts University, Boston University, Northeastern University, Smithsonian Astrophysical Observatory, National Bureau of Economic Research, Broad Institute, Lowell Center for Space Science & Technology, National Emerging Infectious Diseases Laboratories
