Job DescriptionThe Sr. Director, Architect – Research Franchises is a senior technical leadership role responsible for defining and maintaining the long-term scientific and systems architecture of Bose Research capability franchises.
Bose Research is transforming its franchise-based models toward the durable capability domains of perceptual intelligence, environmental sensing, distributed edge orchestration, and trusted intelligent systems. These domains are expected to serve as the long-term scientific engines that power Bose’s future discoveries, technologies, platforms, and businesses.
Within this model, the Franchise Architect ensures that each franchise maintains a coherent scientific direction, durable research agenda, and strong architectural alignment with Bose’s long-term Smart Edge technology strategy.
This role sits at the intersection of advanced research, systems architecture, and enterprise strategy, partnering closely with Research leadership, Corporate Strategy, and the Bose-X team to ensure that long-horizon scientific work produces enduring capability platforms and disciplined innovation pathways.
This role is responsible for:
- defining the 10-year science arcs for the franchises
- ensuring technical coherence across research programs
- guiding the development of foundational IP, models, and datasets
- connecting research breakthroughs to scalable technology platforms
This role requires a deep systems thinker capable of operating across disciplines such as AI/ML, sensing, acoustics, signal processing, edge computing, and human-centered systems design.
Key Responsibilities
Franchise Scientific Direction
- Define and maintain the long-term scientific vision and architecture for the Bose Research capability franchises.
- Establish and evolve the franchises’ 10-year science arcs, ensuring that research efforts build durable, defensible capability layers rather than isolated technical breakthroughs.
- Guide the development of foundational research assets, including models, datasets, evaluation frameworks, and reference implementations.
- Ensure scientific depth and intellectual integrity while maintaining alignment with the company’s long-term technology strategy.
Program Architecture & Technical Governance
- Work with program leaders and the Program Portfolio team to ensure research programs align with franchise science arcs and technical priorities.
- Provide technical oversight on new program charters to ensure architectural coherence and avoid duplication across research areas.
- Guide the development of deployable primitives and technical frameworks that can scale into platforms and products.
- Serve as the technical authority for major architectural decisions affecting franchise direction.
Cross-Franchise Systems Coherence
- Collaborate with Franchise Leads to ensure coherence across domains such as perception, sensing, orchestration, and trusted intelligent systems.
- Identify and develop shared system architectures that enable cross-domain capabilities across devices, environments, and networks.
- Prevent fragmentation of research efforts by maintaining architectural alignment across the lab.
Research to Platform Translation
- Partner with Bose-X and internal engineering teams to ensure that foundational research work can evolve into scalable technology platforms and reusable capability layers.
- Help translate scientific advances into deployable primitives, platform modules, and long-term technology building blocks.
- Support the identification of research breakthroughs that may lead to:
- product innovation
- platform capabilities
- licensable intellectual property
- future venture opportunities
External Scientific Leadership
- Represent Bose in collaborations with universities, national labs, research institutes, and advanced technology partners.
- Contribute to shaping Bose’s reputation as a leader in long-horizon research and systems innovation.
- Maintain awareness of emerging technical developments that may affect franchise direction.
Qualifications
- 10+ years of experience in advanced research, systems architecture, or deep technology development in domains such as AI/ML, sensing systems, signal processing, distributed systems, or human-centered computing.
- Demonstrated ability to define and guide long-term technical research agendas.
- Strong systems thinking capabilities and experience working across multiple technical disciplines.
- Experience guiding research teams toward foundational intellectual property and scalable capability development.
- Track record of influencing technical direction across research, engineering, and strategy stakeholders.
- Exceptional communication skills with the ability to articulate complex technical concepts to executive leadership.
- Comfort operating in ambiguous, discovery-driven environments focused on long-term innovation.
- Experience collaborating with academic institutions, research labs, or advanced technology ecosystems.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience working in leading research organizations such as corporate research labs, advanced technology groups, national labs, or frontier technology startups.
- Background in systems architecture for intelligent devices, edge computing, sensing systems, or AI platforms.
- Experience contributing to foundational technologies that evolved into scalable products or platforms.
- Advanced degree (PhD or equivalent experience) in engineering, computer science, applied science, or related fields.
- Strong external research network across academia or advanced technology ecosystems.
