ABOUT OUR COMPANY:
The crushing weight of debt is something that we believe holds people back from reaching their dreams and making a splash in the world. So in 2013, after seeing our friends and family struggle with student loans, we created Splash Financial.

Over the years, our mission has expanded to include helping people with other forms of debt - such as refinancing credit cards, which are at all time highs in the US. And we’ve been able to refinance $6+ Billion in loans through our network of Splash, powered credit union and bank partners who leverage our marketplace and automated loan processing technology. And we’ve raised over $70 million from investors like partners of DST Global, Citi Ventures, TruStage Ventures, Northwestern Mutual Future Ventures, Detroit Venture Partners, and more.

But at our core, we’re still that little company from Cleveland with a big dream: to make people more powerful than their debt and we’re just getting started..

ABOUT OUR WORKPLACE:

Splash is remote-first, and proud of it.

We spend our days simplifying financial products and getting them into the hands of people who need them most. Right now, we’re focused on building financial technologies that fundamentally transform how the industry lends.

Although Splash has been around since 2013, we still operate like a startup — fast-paced, nimble, and full of heart. We’re good people who care deeply about doing meaningful work and we approach challenges with creativity, passion, and urgency.

And to hire the best, we provide the best: great health insurance, competitive salaries, and unique benefits like quarterly meet-ups and access to engagement tools that keep us connected — even from afar.

At Splash, everything we do is guided by our values:

Own It – We take full accountability and follow through on commitments.

Raise the Bar – We move fast, innovate faster, and push through barriers.

Say the Hard Thing – We speak up with honesty, respect, and a desire to solve problems and make things better.

Elevate Each Other – We win as a team by lifting each other up.

These values show up in how we work and how we connect — whether we’re collaborating on big projects or bonding over everyday moments. Yes, we even have Slack channels for #kids-and-pets and #food because we believe being human makes us better teammates.

ABOUT THE ROLE:

Splash Financial is seeking a seasoned Software Architect to lead the design and evolution of our Consumer Lending Platform. This role is critical in shaping platform capabilities and product features across the entire loan lifecycle—from acquisition and originations to servicing and operations.

You’ll collaborate closely with engineering, product, compliance, and external partners to build scalable, modular, and reusable systems. This includes integrating with decisioning systems, bureaus, fraud providers, and data platforms. You will also guide long-term architectural strategy, enabling our transition away from monoliths to a modern, service-oriented and event-driven architecture.

This is a hands-on architecture role where you should be comfortable writing code for prototypes or reference implementations, and advising engineering teams through execution.

WHAT YOU’LL DO AT SPLASH:
  • Define and evolve platform capabilities across the full lending lifecycle—pre-qual, post-qual, agent tools, lender tools, servicing, and platform components.
  • Architect and lead integration with 3rd-party fintechs (bureaus, fraud vendors, underwriting tools, operations systems, etc.).
  • Partner with engineering and product leaders to catalog and assess existing systems, identify opportunities for re-architecture, and drive modularization.
  • Design and implement platform features that are reusable, multi-product ready, and built to scale.
  • Champion a service-oriented and event-driven architecture, establishing patterns and governance.
  • Provide technical leadership and write high-quality code for prototypes or critical implementations.
  • Develop multi-year architectural roadmaps aligned with product growth, scale, and technical resilience.
  • Influence buy-vs-build decisions, and ensure architectural consistency across cross-functional teams.
WHAT YOU’LL BRING TO SPLASH:
  • Deep domain expertise in consumer lending across originations, underwriting, fraud, servicing, and operational workflows.
  • Proven architecture leadership designing and scaling distributed systems in multi-product SaaS or platform environments.
  • Strong systems-integration background, including hands-on work with fintech APIs, credit bureaus, fraud vendors, and decisioning platforms.
  • Hands-on engineering experience with modern languages such as Kotlin, Java, Clojure (or similar), and JavaScript/TypeScript.
  • Proficiency in front-end technologies—React, Next.js, Redux, and GraphQL—with the ability to guide UI/UX architecture for internal tools and platform-facing experiences.
  • Expertise in Service-Oriented and Event-Driven Architecture patterns, including domain modeling and asynchronous workflows.
  • Solid understanding of distributed systems, messaging platforms (Kafka, Kinesis), and microservice best practices.
  • Strong background building and operating systems on AWS (Lambda, ECS, Aurora, S3, IAM, etc.).
  • Proficiency with relational and NoSQL databases, including schema design, data modeling, and performance tuning.
  • Deep understanding of modern data platforms and the importance of clean, well-modeled data as the foundation for scalable analytics, AI, and machine-learning capabilities.
  • Strong cross-functional mindset, with experience partnering closely with Product, Security, Compliance, Data, Decision Science, Credit, and Operations teams.
  • A builder’s mindset with a passion for scaling platforms, creating reusable components, and reducing tech debt through strategic architecture decisions.
Bonus Skills:
  • Strong understanding of AI enablement and how to leverage AI/ML to accelerate product and platform capabilities in fintech.
  • Familiarity with crypto and blockchain technologies to help envision and enable future lending products and decentralized finance opportunities.
COMPENSATION:

The base salary range for this role is $200,000 to $250,000 annually, based on market data and internal compensation practices. This role may also be eligible for a bonus component tied to individual and company performance. Final compensation will be determined by factors such as location, experience, and skill level.

SPLASHERS ENJOY:

  • Fully remote work freedom
  • Competitive salary packages
  • Flexible PTO + 9 company holidays
  • Equity: Share in our start-up success
  • Comprehensive and affordable insurance benefits
  • Paid parental leave for both caregivers
  • Essential equipment to get the job done
  • 401(k) for your future savings
  • Quarterly meet-ups: In person & virtual fun
  • Awesome Splash swag to flaunt your team spirit

What you need to know about the Boston Tech Scene

Boston is a powerhouse for technology innovation thanks to world-class research universities like MIT and Harvard and a robust pipeline of venture capital investment. Host to the first telephone call and one of the first general-purpose computers ever put into use, Boston is now a hub for biotechnology, robotics and artificial intelligence — though it’s also home to several B2B software giants. So it’s no surprise that the city consistently ranks among the greatest startup ecosystems in the world.

Key Facts About Boston Tech

  • Number of Tech Workers: 269,000; 9.4% of overall workforce (2024 CompTIA survey)
  • Major Tech Employers: Thermo Fisher Scientific, Toast, Klaviyo, HubSpot, DraftKings
  • Key Industries: Artificial intelligence, biotechnology, robotics, software, aerospace
  • Funding Landscape: $15.7 billion in venture capital funding in 2024 (Pitchbook)
  • Notable Investors: Summit Partners, Volition Capital, Bain Capital Ventures, MassVentures, Highland Capital Partners
  • Research Centers and Universities: MIT, Harvard University, Boston College, Tufts University, Boston University, Northeastern University, Smithsonian Astrophysical Observatory, National Bureau of Economic Research, Broad Institute, Lowell Center for Space Science & Technology, National Emerging Infectious Diseases Laboratories
