Software Quality Engineer

Role
The Software Quality Engineer is a tactical role responsible for ensuring software quality through manual testing and defect logging. This individual works under the leadership of the Software Quality Lead or Manager and works closely with development and product teams to identify and resolve issues, contributing to the overall quality of software components and smaller applications.
Responsibilities
The responsibilities for this role center on manual testing and defect management, with an emphasis on collaboration and continuous learning of automation strategies to improve software quality. The key focus is on tactical execution to identify and log software defects and then work with the larger team to get them resolved.
- Review software requirements, designs, and acceptance criteria.
- Write and execute manual test scripts following established testing processes.
- Log and document software defects found during testing.
- Perform regression and sanity testing to ensure new changes do not negatively impact existing functionality.
- Collaborate with Software Quality Engineers (SQEs), Software Development Engineers (SDEs), and Product Development Owners (PDOs) to communicate issues and resolve defects.
- Collaborate with Product Owners to refine user stories and acceptance criteria, ensuring they are clear and testable.
- Contribute to the improvement of test processes and quality metrics.
- Learn and apply test automation strategies and existing test tools at the component and application level.
- Use SQL queries to verify data accuracy and integrity during testing.
Qualifications
- BA/BS degree or equivalent experience.
- 2–4 years of relevant experience in software quality assurance.
- Knowledge of quality assurance fundamentals.
- Understanding of basic software development principles.
- Familiarity with Agile and Scrum methodologies.
- Basic knowledge of SQL, with the ability to write and execute simple queries to validate data for test cases.
- Solid organizational skills and high attention to detail.
- Ability to communicate clearly, concisely, and in an organized fashion.
- Demonstrated ability to identify problems and seek guidance for solutions.
- Experience estimating the effort required for assigned work.
- Proven ability to build productive working relationships and actively participate in team discussions.
