Introduction

At Cytiva, we design liquid chromatography systems for different needs at every scale in the life science industry. Liquid chromatography is about filtering a mixture of things into pure sub-components. An example could be extracting a target protein for a drug from a mixture of many proteins. The filtration happens in a column (a pipe filled with a filtering substance called a resin): many things go in at once but come out separated in time. By using a sensor after the column (usually a UV sensor measuring transmittance in the liquid), one of these outputs from the column can be detected and collected. Runs are measured at a specific sample rate and are stored as equidistant data. For very long runs, this exhaust computational resources during run. To address that it is very common to use data reduction to being able to continue running on the expense of a loss of measurement data.

Problem
There are many different approaches to represent measurement data as efficient as needed. In this thesis work, you will investigate different techniques to handle efficient collection of measurements during run as well as storing data at rest in an efficient way. Modern techniques for floating point compression, both lossless compression and lossy compression, could be used. In the investigation, it is important to make a trade-off between efficiency with respect to memory consumption and computational performance as well as computational precision.

We are currently looking for a university student interested doing their Master Thesis project with us. You will be responsible for evaluating new algorithms to avoid or alleviate data reduction that can be used in UNICORN in the future. You will receive the opportunity to use your numerical analysis knowledge as well as your software development skills.

This position reports to the Sr Manager UNICORN Application Software and is part of the Software/Firmware Engineering - BP RnD Software Department located in Uppsala, Sweden and will be an on-site role.

What you'll do

  • Be introduced to the application area, existing techniques, relevant data structures and algorithms.

  • Receive access to test data.

  • Perform a literature study on how to design algorithms for specific use cases.

  • Review implementation of one or several techniques, and compare and evaluate different techniques.

Who you are

  • Master student within Computational Science, Engineering Physics, Engineering Mathematics, or similar.

  • Genuine interest in mathematics and programming.

  • Knowledgeable in numerical analysis, particularly transform theory and approximation theory.

  • Good skills in an object oriented programming language, preferably C#.

  • You communicate fluently in Swedish and English.

It would be a plus if you also possess

  • Eligible for master thesis project work

  • An analytical mindset, attention to detail and confident work independently.

Selection and interviews will happened continuously. Don't hesitate to send in your application. Welcome!

What you need to know about the Boston Tech Scene

Boston is a powerhouse for technology innovation thanks to world-class research universities like MIT and Harvard and a robust pipeline of venture capital investment. Host to the first telephone call and one of the first general-purpose computers ever put into use, Boston is now a hub for biotechnology, robotics and artificial intelligence — though it’s also home to several B2B software giants. So it’s no surprise that the city consistently ranks among the greatest startup ecosystems in the world.

Key Facts About Boston Tech

  • Number of Tech Workers: 269,000; 9.4% of overall workforce (2024 CompTIA survey)
  • Major Tech Employers: Thermo Fisher Scientific, Toast, Klaviyo, HubSpot, DraftKings
  • Key Industries: Artificial intelligence, biotechnology, robotics, software, aerospace
  • Funding Landscape: $15.7 billion in venture capital funding in 2024 (Pitchbook)
  • Notable Investors: Summit Partners, Volition Capital, Bain Capital Ventures, MassVentures, Highland Capital Partners
  • Research Centers and Universities: MIT, Harvard University, Boston College, Tufts University, Boston University, Northeastern University, Smithsonian Astrophysical Observatory, National Bureau of Economic Research, Broad Institute, Lowell Center for Space Science & Technology, National Emerging Infectious Diseases Laboratories
