About the role
We're looking for an Engineering Manager who thrives on leading high-performing teams while staying close to the technical action.
The successful candidate will have been a software engineer and has grown into a technical leader, will have product sensibility and likes to organize teams to get the job done. This role combines deep technical expertise with strategic thinking, where you'll guide your team's technology decisions while representing their needs across the organization.
The Data Platform tribe includes three teams, 4-5 people each. This tribe ensures Crunch reliably imports customer survey data via file uploads, streaming, and third-party API providers. They also build tools for data processing teams to clean and transform data in Crunch, and last but not least, they also develop our internal analytics engine to deliver interactive-speed analysis for customers.
These are the essentials you’ll need to get an interview
Previous experience is key: At least 5 years of experience as an individual contributor where you were known for shipping good quality software, and also at least 4 years of project/team management in a software organization.
A good track record: You’ve done this before, and you can talk to 2 or 3 projects key projects you led up to the finish line. You can talk about how your technical experience was crucial to align with product, put a solid delivery plan. You talk to some high-level models and techniques to get the team on track.
Engineer/builder mentality: We understand that coding becomes less frequent in this role, but you can still contribute. You can run experiments and share the learnings with the team, and you create proofs of concept to demonstrate an end-to-end flow.
You’ve learned to become a generalist: You can join discussions in a variety of topics. CI/CD? Check. Container orchestration? Check. Product management? Check. The best database to use? Check. Why is our API slow? Check. The best hiring process? Check. How to organize a 6 weeks sprint? Check. How to poach an egg perfectly? Check.
Ownership of your teams and subsystems: The best teams are empowered to own their subsystems and show great levels of accountability. You know that, that’s what you strive for.
Good communication at different levels: The last but the most important. You’ll speak with different people on a day-to-day basis, and not everyone is technical. Being able to speak at different “levels of abstraction” is key. The commercial team will come to you for an estimate, the support team will need help to craft a message to a customer and a senior lead will want to understand the technical approach for a specific problem.
A person you’ve mentored and impacted: There needs to be at least one person that can talk about how you’ve impacted their career (for good!). Leading teams is more than just the technical and delivery aspect. You know that, and you’ve learned how to take the best out of people.
Technical Proficiency: Prior experience with our core technologies and tools: Python, Flask/FastAPI, MongoDB, Apache Iceberg/Parquet, k8s, AWS Glue/Athena and CircleCI.
It would be great if you had these too:
Good knowledge of data models and databases: Have you read “7 databases in 7 weeks”? Or “Designing Data-Intensive Applications”. That’s going to be handy! If you haven’t read, hopefully they are on your reading list. We can order them for you.
What you will do
Manage and lead distributed teams across North America and Europe. Work with the technical leads to assign work, track completion, and equip the team with clear specs, direction, and resources.
Provide technical expertise, lead technical discovery and trade-off analysis, and set engineering standards and best practices.
Partner with product, sales, and customer success to define vision and write requirements. Work with the technical leads to turn requirements into a concrete technical design.
Prioritize projects and developer capacity to meet company goals. Break work into epics and tickets, manage dependencies and critical paths, and set realistic timelines.
Report status and development KPIs to leaders and stakeholders. Drive performance reviews, hiring, onboarding, training, mentoring, and career development.
