Job Description:
Our Opportunity Chewy is growing! We're looking for a Software Engineer II to join our Cart & Checkout team supporting Chewy.com. Chewy is the trusted destination for pet parents and partners alike, and our checkout experience sits at the heart of every purchase-whether it's a single-item B2C order or a complex, high-volume B2B transaction. We are continuously focused on delivering a fast, reliable, and seamless transactional experience across all Chewy platforms. 1. Are you a passionate and driven software engineer who enjoys building systems customers rely on every day? 2. Are you excited about developing solutions that power business-critical, highthroughput transactions? 3. Do you enjoy collaborating across teams and integrating with complex systems? 4. Are you a quality-focused engineer who cares about correctness, resiliency, and performance? If this sounds like you, read on. The Cart & Checkout Engineering team is responsible for building and operating the services that orchestrate the end-to-end checkout experience across multiple internal platforms. Our systems coordinate interactions between pricing, promotions, tax, shipping, payments, fraud, and order services to ensure every checkout is accurate, resilient, and trustworthy. As part of this team, you'll work closely with backend engineers, product managers, and platform partners in an Agile environment to deliver highly available, transaction-heavy services at Chewy's scale. This role offers strong opportunities for technical growth and ownership in one of the most critical areas of the business-turning customer intent into completed orders that pet parents and partners depend on every day.
What You'll Do • Build and enhance cart and checkout services that orchestrate transactions across pricing, promotions, tax, shipping, payments, and order systems • Implement backend features that support reliable, low-latency checkout flows under high traffic • Contribute to service integrations and API contracts with multiple downstream teams • Write clean, readable, well-tested code following established patterns and best practices • Participate in code reviews and design discussions, incorporating feedback to improve solutions • Help identify and troubleshoot performance, reliability, and production issues • Write and update documentation for service behavior, APIs, and operational workflows • Take ownership of assigned stories and deliverables, communicating progress and risks clearly
What You'll Need • Professional experience developing backend services using Java and Spring Boot • 3+ years of professional experience working with server-side technologies • Experience building and consuming RESTful APIs • Familiarity with microservices architectures and dependency-based systems • Understanding of distributed systems fundamentals, including retries, timeouts, and failure handling • Hands-on experience using AWS in a production environment • Exposure to monitoring and observability tools such as Datadog or Dynatrace • Experience working in a CI/CD environment (e.g., Jenkins) • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science or equivalent experience
Preferred Qualifications • Experience working on e-commerce or transaction-heavy systems • Familiarity with frontend technologies (JavaScript, React/Angular/Vue) and how backend services support UI flows • Experience writing automated tests within a test framework • Understanding of Agile development practices • Exposure to AI-assisted application development, including integrating backend services with large language model (LLM) platforms such as OpenAI APIs • Familiarity with model context protocols (MCP) or similar frameworks used to manage and route contextual data for AI-powered workflows • Familiarity with state machine technologies (e.g., AWS Step Functions, Apache Airflow) for workflow orchestration and state management • Experience building or integrating event-driven or API-based systems that support conversational or assistive user experiences
The base salary range for this role is $115,000 - $191,500.
  • The specific salary offered to a candidate may be influenced by a variety of factors including but not limited to the candidate's relevant experience, education, and work location. In addition, this position is eligible for 401k and a new hire and annual equity grant. C08+ positions may also be eligible for annual bonus.

We offer different types of insurance and benefits, such as medical/Rx, vision, dental, life, disability, hospital indemnity, critical illness, and accident. We offer parental leave, family services benefits, backup dependent care, flexible spending accounts, telemedicine, pet adoption reimbursement, employee assistance program, and many discounts including 10% off pet insurance and 20% off at Chewy.com.
Exempt salary team members have unlimited PTO, subject to manager approval. Team members will receive six paid holidays per year. Team members may be eligible for paid sick and family leave in compliance with applicable state and local regulations.

Host to the first telephone call and one of the first general-purpose computers ever put into use, Boston is now a hub for biotechnology, robotics and artificial intelligence — though it’s also home to several B2B software giants. So it’s no surprise that the city consistently ranks among the greatest startup ecosystems in the world.

Key Facts About Boston Tech

  • Funding Landscape: $15.7 billion in venture capital funding in 2024 (Pitchbook)
  • Notable Investors: Summit Partners, Volition Capital, Bain Capital Ventures, MassVentures, Highland Capital Partners
  • Research Centers and Universities: MIT, Harvard University, Boston College, Tufts University, Boston University, Northeastern University, Smithsonian Astrophysical Observatory, National Bureau of Economic Research, Broad Institute, Lowell Center for Space Science & Technology, National Emerging Infectious Diseases Laboratories
