What You'll Do
- Design, build, and maintain scalable backend systems, APIs, and microservices that power Chewy's internal clickstream analytics, experimentation, and data platforms.
- Develop and operate event-driven architectures using Apache Kafka to support real-time data collection, streaming, and integration, ensuring data accuracy and consistency across analytics pipelines.
- Architect and manage cloud infrastructure on AWS in partnership with DevOps, with a focus on scalability, high availability, fault tolerance, and disaster recovery.
- Implement robust, fault-tolerant data services that ingest, process, and deliver trillions of daily events to downstream systems, supporting operational dashboards, reporting, and experimentation frameworks.
- Write clean, maintainable, and well-tested code, and contribute to code reviews, design discussions, and CI/CD best practices to ensure code quality and continuous delivery.
- Automate infrastructure provisioning using Terraform and Git-based workflows to deploy scalable, containerized applications. Champion infrastructure-as-code best practices across the team.
- Ensure reliability and performance of critical services through observability (e.g., Datadog, Grafana), active monitoring, and resolution of performance bottlenecks in high-throughput environments.
- Implement secure authentication and authorization mechanisms, including SSO, RBAC, IAM policies, secrets management, and vulnerability mitigation.
- Collaborate cross-functionally with frontend engineers, data engineers, data scientists, and product managers to understand requirements and translate them into backend solutions aligned with Chewy's business goals.
- Drive a culture of technical excellence and continuous improvement through documentation and collaboration, while upholding Chewy's standards for data security, compliance, and stakeholder trust.
- Articulate complex technical ideas (e.g., why a unified metric needs a certain definition, or how a new infrastructure change will reduce latency) to both technical and non-technical stakeholders.
What You'll Need
- 5+ years of professional full-stack or backend software engineering experience, leading the design or architecture of large-scale systems in data-intensive environments, with a track record of delivering high-impact platform solutions.
- Proficiency in Java or Kotlin, with strong knowledge of building high-scale distributed systems and microservices.
- Experience building and deploying containerized applications and services using Docker and Kubernetes.
- Expertise in event-driven architecture design with a focus on scalability and fault tolerance.
- Hands-on experience with Apache Kafka or similar event-streaming platforms.
- Strong familiarity with AWS services such as EC2, ECS, CloudWatch.
- Knowledge of modern data stores and query engines including Snowflake, Databricks, Azure, or Amazon Redshift.
- Experience with Terraform and observability tools such as Datadog, Dynatrace, CloudWatch, and Grafana.
- Previous work on data platforms, experimentation frameworks, or site analytics in a high-growth or e-commerce setting.
- Proficiency in SQL databases (e.g., MySQL, PostgreSQL) for schema design, query optimization, and data modeling.
- Nice to have: Frontend development skills using TypeScript/JavaScript.
