Our Opportunity:
Chewy is seeking a Software Engineer II for our Release Engineering team in Boston, MA! At Chewy, it is our mission to be the most trusted and convenient destination for pet parents (and partners) everywhere! The Infrastructure Engineering organization develops services and tools to enable, support, and optimize software development processes and practices for Chewy engineers. In this role, you will enhance existing systems with automation, improve developer experience and productivity, and build observability metrics of business applications that power the e-commerce platform and beyond. Further, you will be on a high performing engineering team where we value broad-based technical skills in cloud-based services, databases, security, serverless technologies, and more. You will have the opportunity to collaborate across the engineering organization to deliver self-service solutions which empower internal customers to move rapidly while building on Chewy's enterprise platforms.
What You'll Do:
  • Contribute to every aspect of the software development lifecycle
  • Architect a resilient system for a customer-facing web application from scratch
  • Ensure systems are fully CI/CD and have responsibility of a plan to get to CI/CD if not there yet
  • Drive innovation through rapid prototyping and iterative development
  • Debug production issues across services and technology stack
  • Continuously measure and optimize the performance, effectiveness, and uptime of backend services
  • Apply algorithms, data structures, and design patterns to build scalable and performant code
  • Collaborate with Team Members to drive solutions to standardize methodologies, workflows, reusable modules, and tooling
  • Participate in setting guidelines for evolving development practices, as well as mentoring junior engineers
  • Think creatively to solve problems that don't have existing solutions
  • Conduct design and code reviews and improve engineering rigor and standard
  • Participate in on-call rotations and operational excellence

What You'll Need:
  • BS degree in Computer Science, a similar technical field of study, or equivalent practical experience
  • 3+ years of strong programming experience with backend technologies like Java and Python
  • Must be team oriented and have a customer first approach
  • Proficiency in Computer Science fundamentals - object-oriented design, data structures, algorithm - design, problem solving, and complexity analysis
  • Be a hands-on Engineer spending significant percentage of their time writing code or debugging issues
  • Knowledge of professional software engineering practices for the full software development life cycle including coding standards, code reviews, source control management, build processes, testing, and operations
  • Experience evaluating, measuring, and tuning application performance
  • Experience with distributed SCM (GitHub a plus), DevOps, AWS
  • Experience working across fully automated stacks in a CI/CD ecosystem
  • Experience mentoring and training the engineering community on technical issues
  • Sharp analytical abilities and proven design skills & design patterns
  • Experience with designing, building and deploying scalable, highly available systems

Bonus (if applicable):
  • Experience in e-commerce
  • Experience with Scrum, XP or other agile methodologies a plus
  • Good communication skills with both technical and business audiences
  • Experience with cloud & orchestration technologies (AWS Services, Terraform, Ansible, etc.)
  • Strong background with modern tools and environments (e.g., Chaos Engineering, web services, version control systems, bug/issue tracking tools)
  • Experience with OpenAPI, Swagger, or stoplight.io
  • Experience with configuration and deployment management via Terraform or Ansible
  • Infrastructure automation through DevOps scripting (E.g. shell, Python, Ruby, Powershell)
  • Experience with data analysis/mining in large scale database environments
