About Beam Benefits

Beam was founded in 2012 by three engineers who saw the opportunity to modernize the dental benefits industry using technology. The first product was the Beam Brush, which was one of the earliest examples of the Internet of Things in healthcare.

Today, Beam Benefits is available in 40+ states and has expanded beyond dental. Beam is now simplifying and modernizing a robust suite of ancillary employee benefits through an intuitive digital platform, self-service tools, AI-powered pricing, and support from Beam’s helpful representatives. This winning combination allows us to deliver a simple, smart, and wellness-focused experience for brokers, employers, and members.

The Role

We are looking for Senior Software Engineers who are not just experts in their craft, but pioneers in the "AI-First" development era. This is a hands-on leadership-by-example role for engineers who care about building software that makes a real difference. You will architect systems that simplify benefits access while aggressively modernizing how our team builds software.

You will:

  • Lead Code Delivery: Architect and write high-quality production code for complex, user-facing workflows, maintaining a heavy hands-on presence in the codebase.
  • Champion AI Efficiency: Serve as a power user of AI tools like Claude Code, Cursor, and Augment to radically increase delivery speed and generate robust automated tests.
  • Define System Integrity: Set the standard for validating, refactoring, and simplifying AI-generated output to ensure the long-term reliability and maintainability of our systems.
  • Apply Senior Engineering Judgment: Exercise high autonomy and thoughtful judgment when tackling mission-critical tasks and complex feature sets.

What You’ll Work On

Improving Access to Benefits: Build sophisticated product features that empower employers and brokers, reducing manual effort through intelligent, intuitive experiences.

Architecting Thoughtful Integrations: Lead the development of reliable APIs and standardized integrations to ensure our platform connects seamlessly with partners.

Advancing the AI Developer Stack: Proactively integrate tools like Claude Code into the daily workflow to automate repetitive tasks and focus the team on high-value engineering challenges.

Creating Trustworthy Systems: Scale our logging, monitoring, and validation frameworks to ensure all workflows remain stable, predictable, and audit-ready.

Who We’re Looking For

  • Experience: 6+ years of professional software engineering experience.
  • Technical Stack: Expert-level hands-on coding ability in a modern web stack (primarily React and Ruby on Rails, though we value transferable seniority from other frameworks).
  • AI Fluency: Experience using AI tools (e.g., Claude, ChatGPT, Cursor, etc.) to improve development workflows, such as code generation, test creation, refactoring, or documentation.
  • Integration Expertise: Proven ability to integrate third-party APIs and AI-powered services into production systems.
  • Foundational Skills: Mastery of testing, debugging, and operating within cloud-based environments.

We value engineers who demonstrate GRIT - who pursue Growth in their craft, show Resilience

under pressure, deliver measurable Impact, and strengthen the Team around them.

What you need to know about the Boston Tech Scene

Boston is a powerhouse for technology innovation thanks to world-class research universities like MIT and Harvard and a robust pipeline of venture capital investment. Host to the first telephone call and one of the first general-purpose computers ever put into use, Boston is now a hub for biotechnology, robotics and artificial intelligence — though it’s also home to several B2B software giants. So it’s no surprise that the city consistently ranks among the greatest startup ecosystems in the world.

Key Facts About Boston Tech

  • Number of Tech Workers: 269,000; 9.4% of overall workforce (2024 CompTIA survey)
  • Major Tech Employers: Thermo Fisher Scientific, Toast, Klaviyo, HubSpot, DraftKings
  • Key Industries: Artificial intelligence, biotechnology, robotics, software, aerospace
  • Funding Landscape: $15.7 billion in venture capital funding in 2024 (Pitchbook)
  • Notable Investors: Summit Partners, Volition Capital, Bain Capital Ventures, MassVentures, Highland Capital Partners
  • Research Centers and Universities: MIT, Harvard University, Boston College, Tufts University, Boston University, Northeastern University, Smithsonian Astrophysical Observatory, National Bureau of Economic Research, Broad Institute, Lowell Center for Space Science & Technology, National Emerging Infectious Diseases Laboratories
