WHO WE ARE:

ActBlue is a nonprofit that builds tech and infrastructure for Democratic campaigns, progressive-aligned causes, and people trying to make an impact in order to fuel long-term, people-powered change. If you’ve ever given online to a Democrat or progressive organization, chances are you’ve used our powerful online fundraising platform.

We put power in the hands of small-dollar donors and help thousands of groups — from presidential candidates to environmental organizations — build grassroots movements. We envision a democracy where everyone looking to make progressive people-powered change can easily and effectively deploy their resources, energy, and creativity to shape our country and future. Each and every one of us, from the political activists to the tech innovators to the customer service pros, is fully committed to our mission.

THE OPPORTUNITY:

As a Senior Software Engineer I, you will be a key contributor on a newly formed team building the next generation of our platform capabilities. You'll be working on a strategic initiative that extends our proven platform to support complex, configurable business rules and workflows. This is a greenfield opportunity within an established codebase where you'll design flexible data models, build intuitive admin interfaces for internal operations teams, and create customer-facing features that make sophisticated workflows accessible and reliable.

Working full-stack with React, TypeScript, and Ruby on Rails, you'll lead large projects from conception to delivery, collaborating closely with internal operational teams to understand their workflows and translate them into elegant technical solutions. The work requires balancing precision with user experience and building systems designed for scale and long-term maintainability.

Our engineering and product organization is organized into cross-functional teams that operate independently in alignment with broader organizational goals. We work with Ruby on Rails, Postgres, React, TypeScript, and other technologies.

WHAT YOU WILL DO:
  • Implement and deliver large projects within your team over the span of a quarter with minimal guidance, breaking down ambiguous requirements into executable work while balancing effort, scope, and impact.
  • Lead a few engineers on smaller initiatives with straightforward requirements.
  • Collaborate closely with internal operational teams (CX, Legal, etc.) to understand complex workflows and translate them into technical requirements and solutions.
  • Work with software engineers, product, and design to develop new user-facing features that make sophisticated workflows accessible.
  • Design and implement flexible data models and systems with performance, scalability, and long-term maintainability in mind.
  • Work across the stack using Ruby on Rails, React, TypeScript, and PostgreSQL in your daily work.
  • Write technical proposals that articulate tradeoffs, risks, and different solution approaches for complex problems.
  • Provide mentorship and knowledge sharing to newer team members through pair programming, code reviews, and technical discussions.
  • Anticipate and proactively communicate blockers, scope changes, and risks within projects before they require escalation.
  • Improve platform performance and maintainability through quality code, testing, monitoring, and documentation.
  • Independently prioritize your work for maximum impact and sustain your own motivation through challenging work, persevering and unblocking yourself as needed.
  • Foster a collaborative and inclusive team culture aligned with our values.
WHAT YOU BRING:
  • 3-5+ years of professional experience working with teams and delivering projects.
  • Experience implementing and delivering large projects within your team over the span of a quarter with minimal guidance.
  • Experience leading a few engineers on smaller initiatives with straightforward requirements.
  • Strong experience in Ruby on Rails, React, TypeScript, and PostgreSQL, with demonstrated ability to work effectively across the full stack. Developed deeper proficiency/expertise in a few areas of the codebase.
  • Consistently able to break down work and set realistic expectations on timing and effort for large projects with some ambiguity.
  • Track record of preempting common security, scalability, and reliability concerns in your own work and in code reviews.
  • Experience building relationships cross-functionally and translating stakeholder needs into technical solutions.
  • Comfort navigating ambiguous problem spaces and evolving requirements while maintaining focus on user needs and maximum impact.
  • Ability to independently prioritize your work for maximum impact and sustain your own motivation through challenging work.
  • Attention to detail and commitment to accuracy, especially when building features where precision matters.
  • Eagerness to explore, refactor, and optimize existing code while identifying opportunities to reuse patterns.
  • Can self-evaluate productively and raise ideas and questions to your manager for constructive feedback conversations.
  • Exhibits resiliency when things don't go as planned; comfortable with times of urgency, stress, or recovering from mistakes.
  • An inclusive, generous working style: You like to mentor, share knowledge, and support your teammates' growth.
  • Comfortable working with a distributed team of remote colleagues.
  • A passion for software and ActBlue's mission to build people-powered movements.

BONUS POINTS IF…:

  • You have experience working in highly regulated industries (healthcare, fintech, legal tech, etc.).
  • You have experience building configurable systems or rules engines.
  • You are proficient with Postgres and data modeling for complex business logic.
  • You have experience building admin interfaces or internal tools.
  • You have experience working closely with non-engineering stakeholders to understand and translate operational workflows into technical requirements.

Host to the first telephone call and one of the first general-purpose computers ever put into use, Boston is now a hub for biotechnology, robotics and artificial intelligence — though it’s also home to several B2B software giants. So it’s no surprise that the city consistently ranks among the greatest startup ecosystems in the world.

Key Facts About Boston Tech

  • Number of Tech Workers: 269,000; 9.4% of overall workforce (2024 CompTIA survey)

  • Key Industries: Artificial intelligence, biotechnology, robotics, software, aerospace
  • Funding Landscape: $15.7 billion in venture capital funding in 2024 (Pitchbook)
  • Notable Investors: Summit Partners, Volition Capital, Bain Capital Ventures, MassVentures, Highland Capital Partners
  • Research Centers and Universities: MIT, Harvard University, Boston College, Tufts University, Boston University, Northeastern University, Smithsonian Astrophysical Observatory, National Bureau of Economic Research, Broad Institute, Lowell Center for Space Science & Technology, National Emerging Infectious Diseases Laboratories
