About Product & Engineering

At Crayon, we believe that deep customer empathy is the best way to build a successful company. It also happens to be a great way to build amazing products. It all starts by trying to better understand our customers. We then work collaboratively to conceptualize, develop, and refine simple yet powerful solutions to meet their needs.

Crayon is at the forefront of using LLMs to analyze data, synthesize insights, and deliver that to customers as useful, actionable intelligence. We tackle a unique combination of data capture and processing, workflow, and information architecture challenges which require innovative approaches to everything from UX to leveraging GenAI, implemented in a modern and scalable SaaS technology stack.

But, we can’t build a great product without a great team and that’s where you come in! We are a small but growing organization, and we’re looking for people who want to do the best work of their careers solving real customer problems. We push ourselves to improve, accomplish more, and maximize our impact – growth opportunities abound.

About the Role

As a Senior Software Engineer at Crayon, you will be expected to build and ship innovative solutions to customer-centric problems, as well as provide technical mentorship in a growing organization. You will tackle complex problems including data architecture, workflow, UX and scalability concerns, with an opportunity to work across Crayon's full technology stack. And you will be heavily involved in mentoring and peer review, helping level-up the Crayon engineering organization. Your success will be measured by the impact of the product you ship, as well as your contributions to Crayon’s engineering culture as a whole.

Responsibilities

  • Be a key contributor on critical product initiatives
  • Provide thoughtful mentoring and guidance to other engineers
  • Code, review, deploy, reflect, rinse, repeat

Requirements

A little about you:

  • Startup experience with small, high-velocity product organizations
  • Experience building with LLMs
  • 5+ years of hands-on development experience. React, Django, and Python are our core technologies. Expertise in those is a big plus.
  • A user-centric approach to developing product, and a strong appreciation for UX principles
  • Rave reviews from former teammates
  • A positive, team-first attitude with lots of smiles and laughs to go around

We are only considering US based candidates at this time.

Benefits

Crayon offers a competitive salary, equity, medical, dental, vision, 401k, generous paid parental leave, take-what-you-need paid time off, and an inclusive culture.

Crayon is committed to building a workplace that welcomes and encourages diverse perspectives, because we know that the most successful teams are diverse teams. We are an equal opportunity employer and prohibit discrimination and harassment of any kind.

What you need to know about the Boston Tech Scene

Boston is a powerhouse for technology innovation thanks to world-class research universities like MIT and Harvard and a robust pipeline of venture capital investment. Host to the first telephone call and one of the first general-purpose computers ever put into use, Boston is now a hub for biotechnology, robotics and artificial intelligence — though it’s also home to several B2B software giants. So it’s no surprise that the city consistently ranks among the greatest startup ecosystems in the world.

Key Facts About Boston Tech

  • Number of Tech Workers: 269,000; 9.4% of overall workforce (2024 CompTIA survey)
  • Major Tech Employers: Thermo Fisher Scientific, Toast, Klaviyo, HubSpot, DraftKings
  • Key Industries: Artificial intelligence, biotechnology, robotics, software, aerospace
  • Funding Landscape: $15.7 billion in venture capital funding in 2024 (Pitchbook)
  • Notable Investors: Summit Partners, Volition Capital, Bain Capital Ventures, MassVentures, Highland Capital Partners
  • Research Centers and Universities: MIT, Harvard University, Boston College, Tufts University, Boston University, Northeastern University, Smithsonian Astrophysical Observatory, National Bureau of Economic Research, Broad Institute, Lowell Center for Space Science & Technology, National Emerging Infectious Diseases Laboratories
