Normal Computing. Incredible Opportunities.

At Normal, we're rewriting AI foundations to advance the frontier of reasoning and reliability in the real world. We are tackling problems across semiconductors and industrials with a mix of interdisciplinary approaches across the full stack: from probabilistic software infrastructure and algorithms to hardware and physics, enabling AI that can reason and understand its own limits.

At Normal, we understand that our technology is only as powerful as the people behind it. Every employee drives significant impact within our products, often working directly with customers and embedding across our tightly-knit team. Our team members are driven by curiosity and passion for solving some of the most challenging problems in the world of atoms.

Normal was founded in 2022 by engineers and scientists that pioneered industry-leading Physics + ML tools for next-gen AI at Google Brain and Google X.

Your Role in Our Mission:

At Normal, we are working to get our state-of-the-art ML research into the hands of our first enterprise customers. We are looking for a senior software engineer to join four other people on our product engineering team. We call this a full-stack role because you will need to understand how your decisions impact our product from end-to-end, though your day-to-day work will be backend heavy. Among other things, it will involve:

  • Designing, building, and operating the backend components required for an enterprise SaaS product: everything from CI / CD, authn / authz, alerting, and monitoring to database integration, internal library development, etc.

  • Collaborating with team members and other stakeholders on various aspects of the project: brainstorming, technical design, and review.

  • Helping our MLE team shape their vision so that it can be realized for our clients.

What Makes You A Great Fit:

  • Startup experience, growing with an engineering org from around 2 engineers to 25+.

  • An affinity for building and operating the foundational components of a product tech stack. We are going from zero to one: much is being written from scratch!

  • A bias toward fast iteration and experimentation over perfectionism.

  • Experience with Python and PostgreSQL.

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills. (We are a global company which believes in strong in-person culture at its hubs.)

Bonus Points For

Wondering how to make your resume stand out? Some things we’d love to know:

  • What is your “nerd snipe Achilles heel?” Distributed systems? Type systems? PLT?  LLMs?

  • We know you could get a job at a FAANG shop, but you’re seeking out a startup instead. Why?

  • Do you have experience working alongside researchers? If so, what was that like?

Every engineer approaches their craft through their own lens. Show us the world through yours!

What you need to know about the Boston Tech Scene

Boston is a powerhouse for technology innovation thanks to world-class research universities like MIT and Harvard and a robust pipeline of venture capital investment. Host to the first telephone call and one of the first general-purpose computers ever put into use, Boston is now a hub for biotechnology, robotics and artificial intelligence — though it’s also home to several B2B software giants. So it’s no surprise that the city consistently ranks among the greatest startup ecosystems in the world.

Key Facts About Boston Tech

  • Number of Tech Workers: 269,000; 9.4% of overall workforce (2024 CompTIA survey)
  • Major Tech Employers: Thermo Fisher Scientific, Toast, Klaviyo, HubSpot, DraftKings
  • Key Industries: Artificial intelligence, biotechnology, robotics, software, aerospace
  • Funding Landscape: $15.7 billion in venture capital funding in 2024 (Pitchbook)
  • Notable Investors: Summit Partners, Volition Capital, Bain Capital Ventures, MassVentures, Highland Capital Partners
  • Research Centers and Universities: MIT, Harvard University, Boston College, Tufts University, Boston University, Northeastern University, Smithsonian Astrophysical Observatory, National Bureau of Economic Research, Broad Institute, Lowell Center for Space Science & Technology, National Emerging Infectious Diseases Laboratories
