As a Senior Software Engineer, you will design and build systems for referral program rules, lead attribution, monetization models, and external partner APIs impacting revenue across real estate brokerages.

At Compass, our mission is to help everyone find their place in the world. Founded in 2012, we’re revolutionizing the real estate industry with our end-to-end platform that empowers residential real estate agents to deliver exceptional service to seller and buyer clients.

At Compass International Holdings (CIH), real estate transactions are powered by a complex web of referral programs, franchise relationships, and monetization agreements — each requiring precise attribution and business rule enforcement. The Referral & Monetization team owns the business rules, attribution pipelines, and tracking systems for brokerages’ Real Estate's referral programs, ensuring every referred lead is correctly attributed to the right program, franchise, and fee structure.

As a Senior Software Engineer on this team, you will design and build the systems that power the CIH referral rules engine, franchise lead attribution pipeline, lead monetization model, and the external partner API used by AST broker matching. Your work directly impacts revenue accuracy and the integrity of referral economics across a national franchise network.

At Compass, You Will:

  • Design and build the referral program rules engine — the system that determines which referral program applies to a given lead, based on brokerage, franchise, geography, and agent profile
  • Own the franchise lead attribution pipeline — tracking which franchise or brokerage sourced a lead and ensuring accurate revenue attribution across Anywhere's broker network
  • Build and evolve the lead monetization model — the set of rules that govern how leads are priced, attributed, and reconciled across programs
  • Maintain and extend the broker matching partner API — an external-facing integration used to match consumers with brokers at scale, with high reliability requirements
  • Build referral program reporting for brokers — self-serve dashboards and data pipelines that give brokers visibility into their referral performance and attribution
  • Design robust, auditable data pipelines that support financial reconciliation and compliance requirements
  • Operate in a scalable engineering culture that leverages modern principles of decoupled systems and automated CI/CD/testing/monitoring

What We Look For:

  • BS in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or equivalent practical experience
  • 7+ years of experience developing comprehensive, well-tested, and high-performance software applications with languages such as Go, Java
  • Experience with gRPC, Thrift, and other server-to-server communication protocols
  • Experience with Kafka and event-driven systems — particularly for building reliable, ordered, and auditable data pipelines
  • 3+ years using AWS / cloud technologies
  • High proficiency designing and implementing microservices that are well tested, fault tolerant, and scalable
  • Understanding and adherence to industry-standard best practices in software development and architecture
  • Believes in good software development requiring thorough testing, robust resiliency features, effective monitoring capabilities, comprehensive documentation, and close collaboration
  • Experience with Scrum/Agile development methodologies
  • Strong critical thinking skills, great communication skills, and passion for delivering operational excellence

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Rules engine or business logic systems: Experience designing and implementing rules engines, workflow engines, or policy evaluation systems where business rules change frequently and correctness is non-negotiable (e.g. pricing engines, eligibility checkers, entitlement systems)
  • Revenue attribution or financial data pipelines: Hands-on experience building attribution systems that track the origin of a transaction across a multi-step funnel — particularly where attribution affects revenue recognition or partner payouts
  • Multi-entity or franchise platform experience: Experience building platforms that serve multiple brands, franchises, or regional entities with distinct business rules, while sharing common infrastructure — knowing when to generalize a rule vs. when to fork it
  • External partner API development: Experience owning and operating external-facing APIs used by third-party partners or brokers, including versioning, SLA management, reliability engineering, and partner onboarding
  • Financial or commission domain knowledge: Familiarity with referral fee structures, commission splits, transaction-level economics, or financial reconciliation workflows — ideally in real estate, insurance, or fintech
  • Audit logging and compliance: Experience building systems where every state transition must be auditable and traceable, supporting financial reconciliation and regulatory requirements
  • Experience with Python or NodeJS development

Compensation: The base pay range for this position is $176,000-$196,100; however, base pay offered may vary depending on job-related knowledge, skills, and experience. Bonuses and restricted stock units may be provided as part of the compensation package, in addition to a full range of benefits. Base pay is based on market location. Minimum wage for the position will always be met.

Perks that You Need to Know About:

Participation in our incentive programs (which may include eligible cash, equity, or commissions). Plus paid vacation, holidays, sick time, parental leave, and recharge leave; medical, tele-health, dental and vision benefits; 401(k) plan; flexible spending accounts (FSAs); commuter program; life and disability insurance; Maven (a support system for new parents); Carrot (fertility benefits); UrbanSitter (caregiver referral network); Employee Assistance Program; and pet insurance.
