Senior Security Engineer
InterSystems is a global leader in data management and interoperability, providing mission-critical technology that underpins systems across industries including public sector, finance, and other critical infrastructure domains. Security is foundational to our mission — protecting sensitive data, enabling trust in connected systems, and ensuring the resilience of platforms that power essential operations around the world.
As a Senior Security Engineer, you will be a key technical leader responsible for advancing the security of InterSystems’ data platforms and related technologies. You’ll design, evaluate, and strengthen the security of complex distributed systems that handle some of the world’s most sensitive and high-value information.
This is a hands-on role with broad influence: you’ll collaborate with engineers, product managers, and architects across multiple product areas to ensure that security principles are embedded at every layer of the technology stack.
Key Responsibilities
- Secure Product Architecture: Partner with software and systems engineers to design and validate secure platform architectures, focusing on authentication, authorization, encryption, and data protection across the InterSystems technology stack.
- Platform and Database Assurance: Analyze, test, and harden database and application components to protect critical workloads and sensitive data. Identify areas for improvement and contribute to the design of new defensive capabilities within the IRIS data platform.
- Security as a Horizontal Function: Work closely with Product Managers and engineering leaders across interoperability, analytics, and data management to ensure consistent and effective application of security principles throughout all product lines.
- Vulnerability Research and Remediation: Investigate, reproduce, and validate reported security issues. Collaborate with development teams to design and review security fixes that meet product quality and reliability standards.
- Threat Modeling and Risk Evaluation: Lead technical assessments of emerging threats, evaluate potential attack vectors, and define practical mitigation strategies to improve product resilience.
- Automation and Tooling: Build and maintain tools or scripts that simplify vulnerability detection, configuration analysis, and security verification in engineering workflows.
- Mentorship and Security Advocacy: Coach developers and engineers on secure coding, threat awareness, and incident response fundamentals. Promote a culture where security is integrated into design and development from the start.
- Continuous Improvement: Contribute to the ongoing evolution of InterSystems’ security practices, incorporating lessons learned from testing, incident reviews, and emerging technology trends.
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related technical discipline. Advanced degree preferred.
- 6+ years of hands-on experience in software, platform, or systems security engineering.
- Strong understanding of database internals, encryption, authentication, and access control.
- Demonstrated experience with threat modeling, code analysis, or vulnerability assessment in complex distributed systems.
- Practical expertise in programming or scripting languages such as C++, Python, or Go for analysis, automation, or prototyping.
- Proven ability to collaborate across technical disciplines and product areas to deliver secure, reliable solutions.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to convey complex security concepts clearly to both technical and non-technical audiences.
Preferred Qualifications
- Familiarity with secure software development practices and security testing methodologies.
- Experience with containerization or distributed data systems.
- Security-related certifications such as CISSP, OSCP, or GIAC are a plus.
- Background in incident response, reverse engineering, or vulnerability research.
