Lead engineering programs at Block to enhance learning, collaboration, and growth among engineers while managing complex, cross-functional initiatives.

Block is one company built from many blocks, all united by the same purpose of economic empowerment. The blocks that form our foundational teams - People, Finance, Counsel, Hardware, Information Security, Platform Infrastructure Engineering, and more - provide support and guidance at the corporate level. They work across business groups and around the globe, spanning time zones and disciplines to develop inclusive People policies, forecast finances, give legal counsel, safeguard systems, nurture new initiatives, and more. Every challenge creates possibilities, and we need different perspectives to see them all. Bring yours to Block.
The Role
The Engineering Culture & Programs team exists to create the conditions for technical excellence to thrive at Block. We focus on the programs and practices that help people in engineering deepen their skills, build trust and connection, and approach their work with clarity and care.
In this role, you'll lead some of our most visible and foundational efforts, from our company-wide Hack Week to engineering-wide onboarding, learning programs, rotation programs, and more. These programs shape how engineers experience Block: how they grow, how they collaborate, and how they feel about the work they're doing. We will look to you to design these programs with intention and bring a high bar to everything you own.
This role is for someone who cares deeply about the engineering experience, and who brings both systems thinking and creative energy to everything they build. You'll need to navigate ambiguity, influence without authority, and lead with care because the way you show up will shape how these programs land and evolve
Ultimately, your programs will shape how technical excellence shows up and will help make Block Engineering a place where people are proud of what they're building, and how they're building it.
You Will
  • Design and launch engineering-wide programs that shape how people learn, grow, and navigate their careers, including onboarding, mentorship, internal mobility, and internal conferences
  • Lead our company-wide Hack Week, working across teams to shape the program's structure, communication, and outcomes and ensuring a smooth, high-quality experience from start to finish
  • Build workflows and documentation that make it easy for people in engineering to participate asynchronously and consistently over time
  • Run targeted feedback loops through mechanisms like focus groups or async chat prompts and turn what you learn into meaningful program improvements
  • Show up in the day-to-day: be present in engineering conversation spaces (like Slack), surface patterns, and contribute when your voice can clarify, connect, or unblock
  • Communicate clearly and document your work in ways that make it easy for others to engage with and carry forward
  • Model high standards for kindness, clarity, and follow-through, and help make those feel like part of how we do engineering at Block

You Have
  • 8+ years of experience leading complex, cross-functional programs, ideally within engineering or technical environments
  • A track record of designing and scaling programs that support growth, learning, or community across large, distributed teams
  • Strong judgment and the ability to bring structure to ambiguity: you know how to align stakeholders and keep things moving without constant direction
  • Excellent communication skills, especially in async-first environments: you write clearly, share context early, and make it easy for others to engage with your work
  • A thoughtful approach to feedback: you know how to listen, look for patterns, and translate input into action
  • A high sense of ownership: you take responsibility for what you ship and care about the impact it has on the people it's for
  • Curiosity, care, and a bias toward clarity: you aim to make things better, and you bring others along as you do

What you need to know about the Boston Tech Scene

Boston is a powerhouse for technology innovation thanks to world-class research universities like MIT and Harvard and a robust pipeline of venture capital investment. Host to the first telephone call and one of the first general-purpose computers ever put into use, Boston is now a hub for biotechnology, robotics and artificial intelligence — though it’s also home to several B2B software giants. So it’s no surprise that the city consistently ranks among the greatest startup ecosystems in the world.

Key Facts About Boston Tech

  • Number of Tech Workers: 269,000; 9.4% of overall workforce (2024 CompTIA survey)
  • Major Tech Employers: Thermo Fisher Scientific, Toast, Klaviyo, HubSpot, DraftKings
  • Key Industries: Artificial intelligence, biotechnology, robotics, software, aerospace
  • Funding Landscape: $15.7 billion in venture capital funding in 2024 (Pitchbook)
  • Notable Investors: Summit Partners, Volition Capital, Bain Capital Ventures, MassVentures, Highland Capital Partners
  • Research Centers and Universities: MIT, Harvard University, Boston College, Tufts University, Boston University, Northeastern University, Smithsonian Astrophysical Observatory, National Bureau of Economic Research, Broad Institute, Lowell Center for Space Science & Technology, National Emerging Infectious Diseases Laboratories
