The Opportunity 

Are you ready to shape the future of cybersecurity at the intersection of law, technology, and innovation? Abnormal Security is seeking a Senior Product Counsel to join our expanding legal team and to work on the forefront of cutting-edge legal and regulatory challenges in cybersecurity, AI, privacy, and SaaS. As our first Senior Product Counsel, you’ll play a pivotal role in assisting to build a scalable Product legal function and partnering closely with our stakeholders in engineering, product, security, and go-to-market (GTM) teams. You’ll assist in shaping and executing on the legal aspects of our product development lifecycle, working to ensure alignment with global regulations, contractual commitments, market expectations, and industry best practices. What you’ll do

You’ll support product development initiatives and GTM programs to deliver strategic value and pragmatic solutions to our product designers, builders, and maintainers.  Representative work may include:

  • Product and Feature Compliance Reviews: Partner with Security, Privacy, Governance Risk & Compliance teams in conducting new product / feature assessments and providing appropriate and timely guidance to R&D at optimal points during the product development life cycle. This includes reviewing customer-facing technical documentation and product marketing materials with designs to ensure our products meet legal, regulatory, market expectation, and contractual requirements.
  • Process Development: Assist in establishing scalable processes to integrate legal guidance throughout the product development lifecycle.
  • Commercial Collaboration: Partner with the Commercial Legal team with respect to product, privacy, security, and regulatory-related contracting points, playbooks, deal support, and key legal team projects.
  • Audit: Serve as Product Legal lead for security and privacy audit activities such as SOC 2, ISO, HITRUST, PCI, FedRAMP, etc.
  • Privacy Collaboration: Partner with Privacy stakeholders on impact assessments and mitigation strategies
  • Open Source & Export Compliance: Partner with internal stakeholders to iterate and operationalize open source and export compliance programs.
  • Subject Matter Expertise: Serve as an internal resource on privacy and data protection laws.
  • Inbound licensing: Support our in-bound technology licensing and acquisition efforts for use in our AI-native cybersecurity products by drafting, reviewing, and negotiating agreements with key third party vendors.
  • Regulatory Monitoring: Track and advise on evolving regulations impacting our products.
  • Training & Enablement: Create training programs for cross-functional teams on privacy and product compliance.
  • Growth Opportunity: Be open to increasing responsibilities as the company expands.

Experience and qualifications you’ll need

  • Education & Licensing: JD or US law degree with bar admission in good standing in at least one US state.
  • Legal Expertise: 8+ years of relevant legal experience, ideally in both in-house and law firm roles.
  • Subject Matter Knowledge: Strong understanding of B2B SaaS, AI, software licensing, intellectual property, and global privacy/data protection laws. 
  • Problem-Solving: Proven ability to navigate complex business and decision-making challenges, balancing legal and non-legal factors (e.g., culture, brand, government relations, and finance).
  • Technical Acumen: Comfortable learning and engaging with technical concepts and emerging technologies.
  • Collaboration: Demonstrated success partnering across diverse business teams and functions in a fast-paced environment.
  • Organizational Skills: Excellent project management, prioritization, and multitasking abilities.
  • Global Experience: Familiarity with working across time zones and cultures; start-up experience is a plus.
  • Tech Proficiency: Comfortable using tools like Google Workspace, Microsoft Office, Adobe Acrobat, genAI tools (e.g., ChatGPT, Writer, Claude, GitHub Copilot), and Slack.
  • Certifications: Privacy and security certifications (e.g., CIPP/E, CISM, CCSK) are advantageous.

Geo: A candidate located on the West coast is preferred.

Base salary range:

$233,000$260,000 USD
