At Medtronic you can begin a life-long career of exploration and innovation, while helping champion healthcare access and equity for all. You’ll lead with purpose, breaking down barriers to innovation in a more connected, compassionate world.

A Day in the Life

Medtronic is seeking a highly skilled and versatile Senior Principal Software Engineer to join our Affera™ Core Technology team. In this pivotal role, you will architect, design, and develop high-performance software solutions across our diverse technology stack—including advanced 3D rendering applications in C++/Qt and modern web-based systems.

You will be a technical leader and generalist, seamlessly moving between our real-time visualization platform (C++/Qt, OpenGL, QML) and our cloud and web-based solutions (Python, TypeScript, React). Your day will involve collaborating with cross-functional teams—ranging from hardware and product design engineers to clinicians and UI/UX experts—to deliver innovative features that drive the next generation of electrophysiology technology.

You will take ownership of critical software components, set technical direction, and ensure architectural excellence. As a mentor and role model, you will guide and inspire other engineers, fostering a culture of technical rigor, innovation, and continuous improvement.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Architect, design, and implement high-performance, real-time 3D visualization and user interface features using C++, Qt, QML, and OpenGL.

  • Contribute as a generalist across the software stack, including cloud, backend, and frontend systems (Python, TypeScript, React).

  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams-including hardware, product, test, and clinical stakeholders-to define requirements and deliver robust, user-friendly solutions.

  • Take technical ownership of major software features and drive them from concept to deployment.

  • Mentor and guide less experienced engineers, fostering a culture of learning, innovation, and technical excellence.

  • Apply best practices in software engineering, including code reviews, automated testing, and continuous integration.

  • Participate in pre-clinical in-vivo system evaluations and laboratory demonstrations for internal and external stakeholders.

  • Ensure compliance with medical device software standards and privacy/security regulations (FDA, IEC 62304, HIPAA, GDPR, etc.).

  • Continuously evaluate and adopt new technologies to keep our software stack at the cutting edge.

Minimum Requirements:

  • Bachelor's degree with a minimum of 10 years of relevant experience, or an advanced degree with a minimum of 8 years of relevant experience.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Degree concentration in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or a related field.

  • Expert proficiency in C++ and Qt (or equivalent event-driven frameworks).

  • Extensive experience developing high-performance, real-time 3D rendering applications (OpenGL, Vulkan, or similar).

  • Proficiency with QML and modern UI/UX design principles.

  • Experience developing software on Linux operating systems.

  • Demonstrated ability to work as a generalist across multiple technology stacks (including web/cloud technologies).

  • Strong architectural skills and experience setting technical direction for complex projects.

  • Experience mentoring and leading engineering teams.

  • Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal.

  • Experience with Python and modern web technologies (TypeScript, React, Vite, etc.).

  • Experience with ROS, embedded systems, and/or real-time operating systems.

  • Experience with medical device development and privacy/security processes and regulations (FDA, IEC 62304, HIPAA, GDPR, etc.).

  • Experience with cloud-based architectures and distributed systems.

  • Strong work ethic, entrepreneurial drive, and a passion for making a tangible impact on patient care.

  • Ability to thrive in a fast-paced, collaborative, and multidisciplinary environment.
