Schweitzer Engineering Laboratories (SEL) is seeking a highly motivated Senior Project Engineer – Studies to join our Power Systems team with a focus on AI and advanced optimization techniques. This role is ideal for candidates with a PhD or Master’s degree (or equivalent experience) in electrical engineering, computer science, or a related field, and a strong background in power system analysis, modeling, and control. The ideal candidate will have hands-on experience with tools such as PSSE, DigSILENT, MATLAB, PSCAD, or RTDS, and a passion for applying machine learning, data-driven methods, and optimization algorithms to solve real-world grid challenges. This position involves working on global projects and may require up to 25% travel.

As a Senior Power System Studies Engineer, a typical day might include the following:

  • Developing and applying machine learning and deep learning models for grid forecasting, control, and predictive maintenance.

  • Implementing reinforcement learning techniques for real-time grid operations and decision-making.

  • Conducting data-driven power system analysis using time-series and spatiotemporal data.

  • Performing steady-state and dynamic simulations to evaluate system stability and performance.

  • Designing and executing Hardware-in-the-Loop (HIL) setups to validate control systems and protection schemes.

  • Applying linear and nonlinear optimization techniques to solve power flow and energy management problems.

  • Utilizing advanced mathematical tools such as Dynamic Mode Decomposition (DMD), Sparse Identification of Nonlinear Dynamics (SINDy), and Singular Value Decomposition (SVD) for system identification and model reduction.

  • Assessing the feasibility and impact of integrating renewable energy sources into existing grids.

  • Analyzing test results to identify and resolve potential issues before field deployment.

  • Staying current with the latest advancements in AI, optimization, and power system technologies.

  • Ensuring compliance with industry standards and best practices.

  • Mentoring and supporting the development of junior engineers.

This job might be for you if:

  • You have a deep understanding of electric power system optimization, control, and dynamics.

  • You are experienced in AI/ML applications in power systems, including forecasting, anomaly detection, and control.

  • You are proficient in simulation and modeling tools such as PSSE, DigSILENT, MATLAB, PSCAD, or RTDS.

  • You are familiar with HIL testing environments and control validation techniques.

  • You are comfortable working with advanced mathematical and system identification techniques.

  • You are excited about applying data-driven and model-based optimization to real-world grid challenges.

  • You are willing to travel domestically and internationally up to 25% based on project needs.

  • You are passionate about mentoring others and contributing to a collaborative, innovative team environment.

What you need to know about the Boston Tech Scene

Boston is a powerhouse for technology innovation thanks to world-class research universities like MIT and Harvard and a robust pipeline of venture capital investment. Host to the first telephone call and one of the first general-purpose computers ever put into use, Boston is now a hub for biotechnology, robotics and artificial intelligence — though it’s also home to several B2B software giants. So it’s no surprise that the city consistently ranks among the greatest startup ecosystems in the world.

Key Facts About Boston Tech

  • Number of Tech Workers: 269,000; 9.4% of overall workforce (2024 CompTIA survey)
  • Major Tech Employers: Thermo Fisher Scientific, Toast, Klaviyo, HubSpot, DraftKings
  • Key Industries: Artificial intelligence, biotechnology, robotics, software, aerospace
  • Funding Landscape: $15.7 billion in venture capital funding in 2024 (Pitchbook)
  • Notable Investors: Summit Partners, Volition Capital, Bain Capital Ventures, MassVentures, Highland Capital Partners
  • Research Centers and Universities: MIT, Harvard University, Boston College, Tufts University, Boston University, Northeastern University, Smithsonian Astrophysical Observatory, National Bureau of Economic Research, Broad Institute, Lowell Center for Space Science & Technology, National Emerging Infectious Diseases Laboratories
